The Kogi Government on Friday urged communities and their leaders across the state to safeguard water facilities in their respective domain to ensure consistent water supply.
The Commissioner for Water Resources, Mr Salami Ozigi, gave the advice after commissioning some water projects in the eastern part of the state as part of activities to mark his one year in office.
He appealed to the people to see those facilities as theirs and guide against any form of vandalisation, stressing that those facilities were meant to serve them directly and not the government.
“We must change our attitude of negligence towards public facilities; we should promptly report incidence of any broken water pipe in our domain to the appropriate authorities for immediate action. Government has spent a lot of fund to install them.
“If there is any remedial measure community can provide before the arrival of engineer from the ministry, then they should be patriotic enough to do it willingly to avoid wastage.
“Even though the projects will be handed over to Local Government after commissioning for proper maintenance, the residents must also play their own roles to protecting and safeguarding the facilities,” Ozigi said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that four rehabilitated water schemes were commissioned by the commissioner which include: Ajaka water scheme in Igalamela, Ajetachi in Anyigba, Imane in Olamaboro and Oguma in Bassa local government area.
However, the commissioner was not satisfied with the level of work done at Ofiayi water works in Idah and gave a directive for issuance of warning letter to the contractor to complete the project under two weeks.
The Secretary of Igalamela LGA, Mr Rilwanu Inuwa, commended the government for fulfilling his promises of new direction agenda in which provision of potable water was one of the five thematic agenda of this administration.
“This water scheme has not been working for over 13 years, but just 15 months in office of Gov. Yahaya Bello, the rehabilitation work has been completed and commissioned today, we thank the governor for fulfilling his promise to our community,” Inuwa said.
Mr Monday Attah, Managing Director of PISTON Nig. Ltd, that handled some of the projects, expressed joy over the timely completion and commissioning of the projects.
“We thank the government for giving us the necessary support to complete the projects. One thing is to start a project and another thing is to have a successful completion of it. I am happy that these projects are completed and commissioned.
“This government is trying and will continue to do more for the people as said by the commissioner and we are always available to render our services. My advice to the communities is to safeguard the facilities,” Attah said.
NAN reports that the people of all the four communities and their various leaders were overwhelmed with joy for having access to potable water and expressed their gratitude to the governor.
