The Kogi Government on Wednesday reaffirmed its commitment to strengthen institutional memory by ensuring strict adherence to comprehensive record keeping in schools across the state.
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Rosemary Osikoya, gave the assurance in Isanlu, Yagba East Local Government Area, while monitoring the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for Junior Secondary School (JSS) across the state.
The commissioner stressed the need for all principals and Head Teachers of schools to inculcate the habit of record keeping of students’ information and transmit same to the ministry to enhance effective planning.
According to her, inability to keep proper record weakens institutional memory when they are not well documented.
Osikoya stressed on the need for the Area Education Evaluators (AEEs) to cultivate the habit of keeping a comprehensive record of total number of registered students for each subject, schools and locations under their jurisdictions.
“As a government entity, official files carrying the ministry’s name should be used in such office. All records must be made available to the ministry for appropriate actions.
“Any official message from the Local Government on any issue to the ministry must be put in writing for proper documentation.
“Any correspondence from the ministry must be acknowledged and properly documented. As government representatives, you must put your house in order and do the needful.
“The problem of insufficient question papers in some schools was laxity on the part of the AEEs who did not make the correct data available to the ministry,” Osikoya said.
She, therefore, urged the AEEs to be proactive in the discharge of their duties for effective service delivery, urging them to maintain the standard and understand the mission and the purpose of the ministry.
Osikoya directed that the total number of primary six pupils in each school taking part in the upcoming Common Entrance Examination and that of JSS3 students for the ongoing BECE, should be sent to the ministry with immediate effect.
The Education Secretary, Yagba East Local Government Area, Mr Amos Balogun, commended the commissioner for the visit, assuring her that there would be tremendous improvement on the part of the staff.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the LGAs visited so far by the commissioner and her team since the commencement of the exam included Lokoja, Ofu, Olamaboro, Yagba East, Mopamuro and Kabba/Bunu. (NAN)
