Kogi Gov’ship: KONGONET Urge New Police Commissioner, CP Onuoha to Ensure Violence-Free Poll

Kogi NGOs Network (KONGONET) has called on the newly deployed Commissioner of Police, Onuoha Bethrand, to prioritize the protection of lives and properties of residents before, during, and after the November gubernatorial election.

In a letter date July 24 addressed to the new Police Commissioner, KONGONET welcomed Ohuoha to Kogi state.

The letter signed by the Chairperson of KONGONET, Amb. Idris Ozovehe Muraina, urged Onuoha to pay keen attention to the ongoing political campaigns leading up to the election.

“On behalf of the Kogi NGOs Network (KONGONET), we extend our warmest congratulations to you on your recent deployment as the 38th Commissioner of Police to Kogi State. We believe that your distinguished experience, leadership qualities, and commitment to public service make you the ideal candidate for this significant responsibility.

“KONGONET is the apex coalition of Civil Society Organization Networks championing the promotion of participatory democracy and good governance in the state through advocacy and policy influencing for the well- being of Kogites.

“We are committed to promoting peace, stability, and development in Kogi State. Our collective efforts are dedicated to fostering social justice, human rights, and sustainable development for the benefit of all Kogites. As a network, we firmly believe in the power of collaboration between civil society and security agencies to create a safe and prosperous environment for our citizens.

“We write to bring your attention to the upcoming Gubernatorial election in Kogi State, scheduled to take place on 11th November, 2023. As you are well aware, this election represents a critical milestone for our state’s democratic process and the future of our people. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that all stakeholders work together to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and inclusive electoral process.

“We kindly request your firm commitment to prioritizing the protection of lives and properties of Kogites before, during, and after the Gubernatorial election. As the chief law enforcement officer in the state, your role is integral in maintaining law and order, preventing electoral violence, and safeguarding the rights and safety of all citizens. We trust in your ability to lead the police force with professionalism, impartiality, and adherence to the rule of law.

“Furthermore sir, we urge you to pay keen attention to the ongoing political campaigns leading up to the election. Political activities tend to heighten tensions and can sometimes result in security challenges. By closely monitoring these events and taking proactive measures to prevent any form of violence, intimidation, or electoral malpractice, you can help ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process,” the letter read.

Muraina assured the new Police Commissioner of KONGONET’s readiness to offer its support and cooperation to the Kogi State Police Command.

“We believe that by fostering closer ties between law enforcement agencies and civil society organizations, we can collectively build a safer and more prosperous Kogi State.

“Once again, congratulations on your deployment as the Commissioner of Police for Kogi State. We are confident that under your leadership, the police force will play a vital role in maintaining peace, security, and justice in our beloved state.”
