The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has appealed to the Kogi State government to forcefully relocate residents of flood affected communities especially in Ibaji Local Government Area.
The Director General of NEMA, Muhammad Sani Sidi, made the call in Lokoja during a visit to Kogi State Governor Idris Wada.
He said the evacuation became necessary because of the flood which has submerged the over 332 communities.
According to him, the issue has necessitated a request for the deployment of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Society’s global tool; field assessment and coordination team.
Sidi disclosed that a three-man team had been mobilised by the Geneva headquarters and was expected shortly in Nigeria for further possible assistance to the victims.
Responding, Wada thanked NEMA and noted that he had directed the evacuation of the victims and assured that the relief materials would reach affected people.
He promised that government would rehabilitate the affected communities and compensate the victims.
