Events that characterizes the recent politics in Kogi East is one that has changed the political philosophy that this constituency has often embraced over the years, which is the “partisan politics” – a kind of politics where a party is voted into power not because it has a better mandate but because such party is well recognized amongst the electorates.
This idea has been invoked in not just Kogi East, but in Nigeria and other underdeveloped nations since the birth of democracy.
This status quo was the foundation upon which the PDP and the present APC are hoping to capitalize on. However influential this statues quo has been, it will be put to test and is no doubt likely to collapse in Kogi East senatorial elections.
When a people have been ignored and allowed to suffer hardship, political torture, abandonment and oppression of all kinds, there is some sort of awakening that arises in them, it might not be rebellious, but it questions norms and orders.
This is what has been planted in the people of Kogi East, this the thought that has been breed inside of them and now they are willing to come out and vote personality and not party.
They are willing to troupe out and support a man with a common vision which is to set things right, and bring the true dividends of democracy down to their door steps.
The people can not be deceived or entice with party slogans, party gimmicks, party portfolios and campaigns, when it is obviously clear that the aspirant the party is presenting to them is an individual who is solely out to enrich himself, his sponsors, his political godfathers and allies.
What they want is some one who is aware of what is at stake, some one who has a comprehensive knowledge of the daily challenges of this constituency, some one who can bring development to the constituency and empower its citizen.
This who the people want, and any party that can not provide such mandate yet hopes to win the votes of the people is obviously deceiving it self.
Votes in Kogi East are no longer depending on the amount of money you intend to share during the elections, the are no longer depending on the cubes of Maggi, bulbs of onions, T-shirts,faces caps and “Mudu” of rice you are willing to give.
It is now what the mandate has to offer, it is now the level of commitment such aspirant has towards the redemption of the constituency, it is now how responsible this aspirants are towards the development of the constituency.
It is in the visible efforts that this aspirant have shown over the years and how this efforts have contributed to the lives of people and persons living in Kogi East.
It is a pity that some aspirants are hoping that by flagging the mandate of an acclaimed recognized political party, winning becomes easy, but they fail to understand that such party only gives you an added advantage – an advantage that a people reliable mandate can get more even in a just formed political party.
A lot of persons have been beating their chest on the grounds that the belong to the ruling party, but they fail to understand that the votes that will decide victory are with the masses who are no longer interested in which party is incumbent or not, which party is a direct opposition or not – or which part is the under – dog.
All they want to know is if you can deliver, if you can salvage their already pathetic situation.
And they moment they recognize this in any mandate irrespective of his political party,he or she will have their lasting support and loyalty.
So, to those banking on the strength of the political party they are going to the poles with, to those hoping that their party will provide them the needed victory, to those who sat in Abuja and hijacked the ticket of their party, don’t fool your self by thinking there will be a repeat of 2015 in Kogi East.
Rather, let them know that this electorates are going to the poles, there they shall x-ray again the mandates and not the party, and there they shall hand over their future to who they can really trust.
Through this they will state clearly like Abraham Lincoln that you can not continue to fool the people all the time.
