So much has been said and written in the past few weeks or months about the two personalities vying for Kogi East senatorial seat.

While no attempt is made here to deprecate the strength of the opinions put forward in such write-ups, it is relevant to state that the agenda the elite set for senators and the garb they fashion for them in order to meet such set goals is a reflection of a default in the knowledge of the roles expected of a Senator of a federal republic.

The emphasis on philanthropic dispositions as an essential quality that marks out a politician for legislative duties sounds pedestrian and uninformed.

And it is this illiterate premise they have been using to measure the performances of previous Senators and pass their jaundiced judgement.

Of course, a man seeking the votes of a people for a political office ought to be associated with the reputation of a good rapport and catering to their welfare.

But if other factors as discussed below run riot with these subsidiary attributes, and the man gets elected solely on that, he will end up using the representative seat to boost his ego and alienate the people. After all the “good” he did for them earlier earned him the seat.

In discussing the main qualities of a senator in the context of comparative assessment, it is impossible not to take sides.

Dr. Victor Adoji, a Kogi East Senatorial seat contestant has been vilified by some excited critics jubilating over a job handout and getting beside themselves with joy for the lucre it promises.

As it is usual with such emotional writers, they went acerbic with their criticism and posted their ignorance about passing it for banal truth.

The main task here is not meet them on their grounds of argument, but to educate them on what they hardly know about Adoji’s personality that stands him head above the shoulders of their benefactor.

Here we go:

Dr. Victor Adoji is full of wisdom; I mean wits. Listen to him speak and act and you will happen on common sense and the application of intelligence which abounds much in him. This is what serves a Senator realistically in the Senate Chamber.

Victor Adoji is affable. He is not the ill tempered, arrogant, or introverted type that can go nowhere in legislative business. He is well endowed with sense of humor, a quick wit, attentiveness to the concerns of others. He is a bit of a raconteur, exhibiting politeness with an ability to disagree while not being disagreeable. He has a pinch of charm and a dash of charisma which will distinguish his service in the Senate.

He has vision and drive. What’s it all about? He Knows where he is going and how to get there; has a plan and pursues it vigorously and whole-heartedly because he is  a true believer who wants to make a difference. He  perseveres even in the darkest hour.

Dr. Victor Adoji is a man of  integrity. He does things because they are right not expedient. He is not high-handed or gloats because he can but is fair and considerate. He returns favor when least expected. His honesty is ingrained and part of his character and even though temptations are presented, he could still get away with something underhanded that his conscience would not allow it.

Adoji is a born leader. He is the cream that rises to the top. He knows when to take charge, possesses the ability not just to control and command but to guide, delegate and influence and possessses the communicative skills to clearly articulate his ideas and motivates others to rally to his cause. Accepts transparency and accountability with the knowledge that mistakes will be made by him and the buck will stop at his desk and he must take responsibility and admit mistakes because he is big enough to do that and to change course when required.

Dr. Adoji is gifted with sharp memory. He remembers where he comes from. Such a man in the Senate will know who he represents and be responsive to his constituents and their needs. He knows that it isn’t about him. It’s about them. A little humility goes a long way, you know.

Adoji is adaptable. He never stops learning. He is flexible about accepting new and better ways to accomplish his ends even if that requires a bit of iconoclastic irreverence. “Park the horse and buggy and take the high speed rail, break out the solar panels , and move ahead with the times and make innovation and technology work for the benefit of all not just the few” is his philosophy. He possesses the practicality to know when to be moderate and accomplish his goals and when to be radical and fight for his values. He knows his limitations and how to take advice. He has the flexibility to realize that the enemies of yesteryear may be the allies of tomorrow and embrace the opportunities that become available.

This is the man, Victor Adoji. These are his credentials with which he is seeking the votes of Igala people to represent them at the Senate. Oblige him!
