Security operatives attached to the backup van in Kogi State Deputy Governor’s convoy on Thursday foiled an attempt by unknown gunmen to abduct motorists along Ejule-Ochadamu road in Ofu local government area of the state.
Confirming the incident, the deputy Governor, Comrade Joel Salifu, said the foiled kidnap attempt happened at Ofejiji in Ochadamu, Ofu LGA, shortly after the passage of his convoy.
He explained that the kidnappers targeted an 18-seater BD Express Bus transporting passengers from Otukpo Benue state to Lagos.
Fortunately, the security agencies in the backup van of the Deputy Governor’s convoy swiftly intervened upon being notified, preventing any abductions.
Upon alerting the Nigerian army, the police, and local vigilante groups, the Deputy Governor directed them to confront the kidnappers and ensure their apprehension for prosecution.
While addressing the situation, the Deputy Governor conveyed his dismay regarding the recurring incidents of attempted kidnappings in the vicinity, instructing the security forces to establish a permanent checkpoint in the area.
He emphasized that the administration of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo remains resolute in combating criminal elements instigating chaos and instability in the state until citizens can sleep peacefully with their two eyes closed.
Deputy Governor Joel Salifu implored the youth of the Ejule and Ochadamu community and its environs to abstain from unlawful activities and promptly report any suspicious behavior or unfamiliar individuals in their surroundings, stressing that security is a collective responsibility.
He sternly cautioned those perpetrating such atrocious acts to cease their actions or be prepared to face the full force of the law.
