Kogi Assembly Votes in Favour of LG Autonomy, States Creation

Kogi State House of Assembly yesterday approved the creation of new states in the country as well as for local governments’ autonomy.

The House which met to consider the 2014 Alteration Bill forwarded to it by the National Assembly however, rejected the scrapping of the State Independent Electoral Commissions, SIECs as part of the constitution amendment.

Those against the sustenance of the state electoral commission said that it was a duplication of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Other clauses ratified by the House included boundary adjustments, Police Reforms and Protection of Persons with Disabilities against Discrimination among many others.

Speaker of the House, Momoh Jimoh Lawal while introducing the bill said the harmonized version was passed in October by the National Assembly in line with Section 9(2) of the 1999 Constitution.

Lawal in his Progress Report on resumption said voting had taken place on all the sections forwarded to the House for its consideration.

“The job of this House on the constitution alteration bill is completed. I hereby direct that the resolution of the House be forwarded to the National Assembly for necessary action,” he said.

Speaking at the assembly complex shortly after the plenary, President of the National Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, Comrade Tom Abutu commended the House for being on the side of the people.

Also speaking, the Executive Director, Centre for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution, CHRCR, Maliki Abdul, applauded the House for the timely passage and their people-oriented legislation saying that posterity would judge them right as legislators that felt the pains of the people.
