The Kogi State House of Assembly yesterday called on the state police command to tackle the rising wave of armed robbery in the state, advising the police commissioner to stand up to the challenge and provide adequate security for the people of the state.
Moving the motion on the floor of the House yesterday, Minority Leader, Hon. Yori Afolabi, drew members’ attention to the activities of men of the underworld who now rob with impunity, undermining the security arrangement of the police in the state.
He said robbers now rob on a particular spot along the Okene-Lokoja road, precisely at Irepeni village, stressing that many unsuspecting travellers have fallen victim in last few months.
Afolabi, who represents Ijumu Constituency in the state House of Assembly, said last week Tuesday, the robbers operated on that same spot, adding that about 500 metres away, there was a police vehicle with registration number: PF 11504, belonging to the Kogi State command and that the two officers in the vehicle said they were not aware of the incident.
The lawmaker said yesterday morning, several people were attacked on that same spot as the robbers again unleashed terror on another set of unsuspecting travellers.
He said the wife of the former Commissioner for Information, Mrs. Ogunmola; the wife of a former member of the state House of Assembly, Mrs. Salawudeen and others, were victims of yesterday’s attack on the Lokoja-Okene highway.
Afolabi urged the House to making a resolution mandating the authorities concerned to live up to their responsibility to provide adequate security for the people and also the travellers plying the Okene- Lokoja-Abuja highway
