Minister of Interior, Gen. Abdulraham Dambazzau (rtd), has blamed the recent jail breaks in Kogi State on old structures state of the prison yard.
Addressing senior officers of the Nigerian Prison Service (NPS) in Abuja, the Minister also warned that government would no longer take negligence as excuse on the part of the senior officers.
According to him, “I am aware of the fact that quite a number of prisons have structural problem, even the most recent ones are not constructed to the standard, I am also aware of the fact that quite number of them are very old.
According to Dambazau, “I have visited a few number of them (prison facilities), some as old as a century, more than 100 years old and there are still the same prisons we are using today. I am also aware that the number of prisoners have increased while the facilities have not been expanded.
“There are something fundamental that rest on your shoulders. There are those things you know must be done to ensure the security of prisons. They include patrolling the prisons, manning the towers, keeping records, knowing the numbers of prisoners you have.
“I want to let you know that this administration will tolerate illegality. Anybody that has the responsibility of looking after the prisons must hold that responsibility squally because if you will be held responsible for anything that happens and sometimes the consequences may not be something you expect. It is very important that you do what is right.”
Controller General of the NPS, Ahmed Ja’afaru, who gave an update on the recent jail break at Koton Karfe Prison in Kogi State, said ” So far, seven out of the 13 escapees have been recaptured and we are hoping to get all of the back.”
