Igalaland, located in the heart of Nigeria, stands at a pivotal moment in its political history. The region is in dire need of a leader who can unite its diverse communities, heal divisions, and steer the land toward a prosperous and sustainable future. The ideal candidate must embody a blend of vision, action, and advocacy—drawing from the legacies of three influential figures: Dr. Stephen Achema, Prince Abubakar Audu, and Honourable Natasha Akpoti.

Dr. Stephen Achema, a visionary leader and statesman, was deeply committed to improving the lives of ordinary citizens. He advocated for a government that prioritized education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for all. Achema’s leadership was marked by a deep belief in unity and self-reliance, especially for the Igala people. His legacy, grounded in integrity and service, remains a touchstone for those who seek a government that works for the people rather than for personal gain. Achema’s focus was always on building a fair and just society where every citizen had the opportunity to thrive.

Prince Abubakar Audu, the first elected governor of Kogi State, was a leader of action. His tenure was defined by practical governance that yielded tangible results for the people. Under his leadership, the state saw significant improvements in infrastructure, education, and business development. Audu’s crowning achievement was the establishment of Kogi State University, now Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, a testament to his commitment to education. Beyond that, he spearheaded the construction of roads, the establishment of essential services, and the fostering of a business-friendly environment that allowed Kogi to flourish. Audu’s leadership style was focused on delivering progress, modernizing the state, and creating an economy that could sustain future generations.

More recently, Honourable Senator Natasha Akpoti has emerged as a trailblazer in Kogi’s political landscape. A dynamic and empathetic leader, Natasha’s approach blends strategic advocacy with a deep commitment to community development and social justice. She has consistently championed the cause of the marginalized, focusing on issues such as inadequate infrastructure, poor healthcare, and economic disenfranchisement in the state. Natasha’s leadership is marked by her advocacy for women’s empowerment and her tireless efforts to ensure that the voices of ordinary citizens are heard and acted upon. Her leadership style is grounded in inclusivity, collaboration, and the belief that true governance is about service to the people, not power for its own sake.

Igalaland faces a critical dilemma. The next leader come 2027 must draw upon the strengths of these three figures—Achema’s visionary ideas, Audu’s action-oriented governance, and Natasha Akpoti’s advocacy-driven leadership. This leader must possess the foresight to prioritize education, infrastructure, healthcare, and economic growth, ensuring that all citizens, regardless of their background, can benefit from the region’s resources. Furthermore, this leader must have the political will and determination to guide the Igala and Bassa people towards the long-sought creation of Okura State—an aspiration rooted in their collective desire for self-governance, progress, and greater autonomy.

Dr. Achema once said, “Leadership is not about power, but about service to humanity.” This sentiment must serve as the guiding principle for Igalaland’s next leader, one who will prioritize the welfare of the people above personal or political ambitions. Similarly, the legacy of Prince Abubakar Audu reminds us that “development is the greatest proof of good governance.” For Igalaland to continue its journey toward prosperity, the next leader must focus on expanding infrastructure, improving education, and fostering economic growth for all citizens.

Honourable Natasha Akpoti’s leadership offers another invaluable lesson: true leadership is not just about making decisions for the people, but about working with them and empowering them. She teaches that listening to the people, understanding their needs, and amplifying their voices are just as important as making executive decisions on their behalf. Her leadership exemplifies the essence of governance that is rooted in compassion, inclusivity, and the desire to elevate the lives of those who are often overlooked.

Igalaland needs a leader who is strong yet compassionate, fearless yet strategic, and, above all, deeply committed to the people. This leader must be willing to put aside personal or political interests in favour of development and progress for all. The future of Igalaland depends on a leader who can draw lessons from the past, adapt to the present, and forge a better tomorrow for the people of Igalaland, the Igala people, and the Bassa community.

As we look to the future, we must demand a leader who integrates the intellectual depth of Achema, the pragmatic governance of Audu, and the advocacy-driven leadership of Natasha Akpoti. This is not merely a political aspiration—it is a moral and developmental necessity. The call for Okura State is not just a dream; it is a movement toward a brighter and more prosperous future. Only a leader with the right vision, courage, and determination can bring this vision to fruition and guide Igalaland to its full potential.
