In a major diplomatic and economic breakthrough, Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has spearheaded a high-powered state delegation to Kuwait, securing a landmark commitment from international partners to finance and drive the execution of the Kogi State Development Plan (2024–2056).
The high-level mission marked a significant shift from preliminary diplomacy to concrete technical execution, opening dynamic partnerships across infrastructure, agriculture, energy, education, and industrial development.
At the centerpiece of the engagements, the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) expressed its readiness, in principle, to partner with Kogi State on priority transformative projects, pending standard technical, financial, and institutional appraisals. The Acting Director-General of the Fund, Mr. Rashaid A. Al-Bader, alongside senior executives, received Governor Ododo to review the state’s strategic blueprint.
Addressing the Fund’s executive leadership, Governor Ododo stressed that Kogi State is seeking a comprehensive, long-term strategic partnership aimed at converting its vast natural reserves and human capital into sustainable wealth. He highlighted the confluence state’s strategic geographic positioning, extensive waterways, agricultural capabilities, solid mineral wealth, and untapped renewable energy vectors as high-yield assets ready for massive job creation and industrial growth.
Under the preliminary framework, the KFAED partnership will target critical sectors, including large-scale water infrastructure, irrigation-driven agricultural transformation, power and renewable energy grids, solid mineral processing and beneficiation, agro-industrial hubs, transport and telecommunications networks, as well as healthcare and education upgrades. The cooperation further encompasses technical assistance, project preparation, feasibility surveys, engineering designs, and environmental assessment frameworks.
Governor Ododo pointed out the interconnected nature of these focal points, explaining that robust water infrastructure directly underpins agricultural expansion, year-round irrigation guarantees food security, and stable power infrastructure powers industrial processing zones, ensuring Kogi retains maximum value from its natural resources rather than exporting raw materials.
Expanding the scope of the mission beyond financial investment, the state delegation held high-level academic discussions with Kuwait University. Meeting with University President, Prof. Dina Musaed Al-Mailem, Governor Ododo brokered plans for knowledge transfer, collaborative research, and institutional capacity development targeting engineering, water resource management, agricultural technology, and innovation between Kuwait University and tertiary institutions across Kogi State.
In a bid to foster subnational bilateral relations, the governor also met with the Governor of Al Ahmadi Governorate, Sheikh Humoud Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, initiating discussions to establish a formal sister-government relationship centered on shared infrastructure, trade, and industrial development models.
Furthermore, technical consultations were held with Kuwait’s Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, Dr. Subaih Abdulaziz Al-Mukhaizeem. The talks focused heavily on executing modern irrigation schemes, launching solar and renewable energy installations, and expanding power grids to light up emerging industrial clusters in Kogi.
To ensure immediate realization of these deals, a joint technical committee was constituted to commence documentation, project designs, and environmental assessments, effectively transitioning the initiative into actionable development projects.
The governor’s official delegation comprised key cabinet members, including the Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Asiwaju Asiru Idris; Commissioner for Works, Hon. Momoh Ozigi Deedat; Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Timothy Ojomah; Commissioner for Water Resources, Hon. Farouk Danlami; State Auditor-General, Hon. Yakubu Yusuf Okala; and the Chief Economic Adviser to the Governor, Hon. Nda Salami.
Expressing gratitude to federal authorities, Governor Ododo commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for providing the diplomatic support that enables subnational governments to engage international funding institutions. He equally applauded the Chargé d’Affaires and diplomatic staff at the Nigerian Embassy in Kuwait, led by Ambassador (Dr.) Abubakar Sanusi Aliyu, for their pivotal role in facilitating the historic mission.
In a statement confirming the success of the trip, Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, affirmed that the Kuwait mission represents a decisive step toward positioning Kogi State as a premier industrial and investment hub in Nigeria.
