Students of secondary schools in Kogi State have been encouraged to be dedicated to their studies, so as to guarantee a better future for themselves. The Commissioner for Education, Dr. Agnes Okai who was represented by a director in the ministry, Mrs. Comfort Maiyaki, made the call recently during the flag-off of the second edition of Governor Wada Academic Excellence Competition (G-WAEC) at the Army Day Secondary School, Lokoja.

The Commissioner who commended the initiator of the project for their vision meant to rekindle academic excellence amongst students of public secondary schools in the state added that the initiative was in tandem with the present administration’s transformation agenda, where education is considered a top priority.

Earlier, the Project Director of G-WAEC, Mr. Michael Onoja, revealed that the whole essence of the project was to create a competitive platform where young students of public schools in the state would be identified and nurtured to attain higher academic standing.

He further stressed that, aside the normal quiz competition, the project has included Essay contest to accommodate the yearnings of students of tertiary institutions who are eager to be part of the competition. He added also that the project has stepped up its packages with the introduction of leadership training with focus on counselling, monitoring and career choice guidance.

While soliciting for corporate partnership to enable them fulfil their vision for Kogi students, Mr. Onoja, noted that the project, G-WAEC though named after Governor Wada, would out-live his administration.

He described the initiative as a living legacy inspired by the governor’s uncommon commitment to the educational transformation of the state.

This year’s flag-off at the Army Day Secondary School Lokoja, had in attendance about six public secondary schools from Lokoja, the state capital.
