The family of Dr. Nazif Yunus, a lecturer at the Kogi State University who was arrested by the Department of Security Services (DSS) in 2013 for allegedly being a spiritual leader of the Boko Haram, has called for his release.

A statement issued by his wife, Sa’adatu Yunus, on behalf of the family, said it had become necessary for the family to re-echo their position to seek justice.

“We wonder why Sheikh Nazif Yunus is still in detention while those who claimed he was the spiritual leader of Boko Haram had since been discharged and released by the DSS.

“The DSS said it had no case against them, but surprisingly, the alleged ‘leader’ whose arrest was said to be as a result of confessional statements by youths is still in detention unjustifiably.”

The family said Sheikh Yunus was never a member of the Boko Haram, hence the outcry of various Islamic groups and individuals and appealed to the federal government to consider their plight and release him.
