Dr. Mahmoud Bala Alfa on Tuesday joined the Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, in receiving the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, during his official visit to Kogi State for the commissioning of the Barefoot Renewable Energy College at the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara.
The commissioning of the college marks another important step in the Federal Government’s efforts to expand technical education, promote clean energy, and equip young Nigerians with practical skills for the future. The project, developed through the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), is expected to become a leading centre for training in solar and other renewable energy technologies.
Dr. Mahmoud Bala Alfa joined other distinguished Nigerians in welcoming the Vice President, describing the project as a timely investment in the country’s future and in the ability of young people to drive national development.
He noted that no nation can achieve lasting progress without investing in education, research, science, and innovation. According to him, institutions such as the Barefoot Renewable Energy College will not only prepare young Nigerians for employment but also encourage entrepreneurship, innovation, and local solutions to the country’s growing energy needs.
Dr. Mahmoud Bala Alfa further observed that the global economy is changing rapidly, with renewable energy creating new opportunities across the world. He said Nigeria must continue to prepare its young people with the knowledge and practical skills needed to compete and succeed in that changing environment.
He also praised the Federal Government for bringing the project to Kogi State, noting that the choice of CUSTECH, Osara, reflects the state’s growing importance in science, technology, and innovation. He expressed confidence that the college would attract partnerships, create opportunities for young people, and contribute to Nigeria’s economic growth.
The event brought together senior government officials, members of the academic community, development partners, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders, highlighting the shared commitment to building a skilled workforce capable of supporting Nigeria’s transition to clean and sustainable energy.
