The Management of Dangote Cement Company, Obajana, Kogi State has agreed to pay N20 million as compensation to families of victims of an accident which occurred on March 9, 2010 at the Felele Market.

10 people lost their lives in the accident which occurred when the driver of a loaded truck belonging to the company lost control of the truck, crushing 18 vehicles before veering off into the market and ending up in a ditch.

The families of the victims had earlier petitioned the State House of Assembly, urging it to investigate the multiple accidents and ensure payment of compensation for the loss of lives and property in the accident.

The Chairman of the Kogi House of Assembly’s Standing Committee on Public Petitions and Human Rights, Abdullahi Lawal, while presenting the committee’s report on its investigation into the alleged refusal of the company to pay compensations, on Thursday, disclosed that the compensation would be paid.

Lawal, while submitting the report, said the committee confirmed the petitioners’ claims and invited the company to a meeting where it was resolved that the victims should be compensated.

The Majority Leader of the House, Alhaji Yakubu Yunusa, commended members of the committee for a job well done, and his motion for the adoption of the report was unanimously carried.

The Speaker of the House, Alhaji Abdullahi Bello, also directed the committee to ensure that the compensations were paid to the families without further delay.
