Beyond Artificial Intelligence: The Growing Demand for Strategic Thinking and Better Decisions

Artificial intelligence is transforming the way the world works, learns and makes decisions. Yet as technology becomes more powerful and information becomes easier to access, a deeper question is emerging: who will have the capacity to think clearly and choose wisely?

Beyond the growing excitement around artificial intelligence lies an equally important reality. The future will belong not only to those who can use intelligent machines, but also to those who can exercise strategic thinking, sound judgment and better decision-making when the consequences matter.

The global professional learning market is entering a significant new phase. For several years, organisations and professionals concentrated heavily on acquiring digital and technological capabilities, and the arrival of generative artificial intelligence accelerated that movement dramatically. Learning platforms have recorded extraordinary interest in artificial intelligence, generative AI, data and automation, while employers continue to identify technological literacy as an increasingly important capability.

Yet another trend is becoming increasingly visible beneath the AI boom: organisations are placing renewed emphasis on the human capabilities required to interpret information, evaluate alternatives, exercise judgment and make sound decisions. The emerging market is therefore no longer defined simply by whether professionals can use new technologies. It is increasingly concerned with whether they can think effectively in an environment where technology can generate information, recommendations and options at unprecedented speed.

The emerging development can be described as the rise of a human judgment economy. The idea reflects a changing economic reality in which distinctly human cognitive capabilities become increasingly valuable as artificial intelligence becomes more capable. AI can analyse enormous quantities of information, identify patterns, produce summaries, generate scenarios and recommend possible courses of action. None of those capabilities removes the need for people to determine what matters, what should be believed, which risks are acceptable and what consequences should be considered before action is taken.

The more powerful technology becomes, the more important the quality of human judgment can become. A major professional advantage may therefore shift from simply possessing information to possessing the capacity to interpret information intelligently and convert it into responsible action.

Evidence from the global workforce market strongly supports this direction. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 identifies analytical thinking as the leading core skill among employers, with seven out of ten companies considering it essential. Leadership and social influence, creative thinking, resilience, flexibility and agility, technological literacy, and AI and big data also feature prominently in the evolving skills landscape.

The significance of these findings lies in their combination. Employers are not choosing between technology and human capability. They increasingly require both. A professional who understands AI but cannot evaluate its outputs may be limited, while a strategist with excellent judgment but little technological literacy may struggle to remain competitive. The emerging workforce model combines technical capability with analytical, strategic and interpersonal capability.

The growth of artificial intelligence learning provides another important part of the picture. Coursera’s global skills data has demonstrated extraordinary growth in generative AI learning, reflecting the urgency with which professionals are attempting to understand and apply the technology. AI education has consequently become one of the most visible segments of the global professional learning market. Yet rapid growth also produces competition. Courses covering ChatGPT, prompt engineering, generative AI, AI productivity and related tools are multiplying rapidly. That creates a broader market question: once professionals have learned how to operate increasingly capable AI systems, what determines whether they use those systems well? The answer increasingly points toward critical thinking, judgment, strategic reasoning and decision-making.

Recent enterprise learning data provides particularly strong evidence of this shift. Udemy’s 2026 Global Learning & Skills Trends Report, based on learning data from more than 17,000 enterprise customers, reports a 25% year-on-year increase in adaptive-skills learning, a 37% increase in critical-thinking consumption and a 38% increase in decision-making skills. These figures are particularly significant because they emerge during a period in which organisations are simultaneously accelerating their adoption of AI.

The implication is not that demand for technology skills is being replaced. Rather, technological transformation appears to be creating new requirements for human capability. Employees need to adapt, question assumptions, evaluate information and make decisions in environments that are becoming faster, more complex and less predictable.

The distinction between information and judgment is central to understanding this emerging market. Information tells a decision-maker what is known. Analysis can help explain relationships within that information. Artificial intelligence can expand both capacities dramatically. Judgment enters when someone must determine what the information means for a particular situation and what action should follow.

A senior executive may receive several plausible strategic options from an AI system, yet the system cannot automatically determine which option best fits the organisation’s values, risk appetite, institutional capacity, competitive position or long-term interests. Those questions involve context and consequence. They require a decision-maker to distinguish between what is possible and what is appropriate. The availability of more intelligence does not remove the responsibility to exercise judgment.

Strategic thinking is consequently becoming more important rather than less relevant. Strategic thinking requires people to look beyond immediate events and consider relationships, patterns, incentives, trade-offs and long-term consequences. It asks decision-makers to distinguish symptoms from underlying problems and short-term gains from sustainable outcomes. This capability becomes particularly important in environments affected by technological disruption, geopolitical uncertainty, economic volatility and rapidly changing markets.

Organisations cannot rely exclusively on historical patterns when the environment itself is changing. Leaders need people capable of asking better questions, challenging assumptions and recognising emerging risks before those risks become obvious. The continued prominence of analytical thinking, creative thinking, systems thinking and leadership in the World Economic Forum’s skills outlook reflects this broader requirement.

Critical thinking occupies a closely related position. The modern professional is exposed to an extraordinary volume of information, much of it generated or amplified by digital systems. The challenge is increasingly not finding information but determining its quality. Professionals must assess sources, distinguish evidence from opinion, identify weak assumptions and recognise when apparently convincing conclusions are unsupported.

Artificial intelligence intensifies this challenge because AI-generated information can appear authoritative even when it contains errors, omissions or inappropriate assumptions. Critical thinking therefore becomes an important component of responsible AI adoption. The professional who knows how to interrogate an AI-generated answer may derive considerably greater value from the technology than the professional who simply accepts its first response.
Decision-making under uncertainty represents another important area of market demand. Many significant professional decisions cannot be made with complete information. Executives allocate resources without knowing exactly how markets will behave, governments formulate policies without knowing all future consequences, investors act without certainty about returns and entrepreneurs make commitments before outcomes can be guaranteed.

The ability to make decisions under uncertainty therefore remains fundamental. The emerging learning opportunity is not simply teaching people a collection of decision-making tools. It involves developing the capacity to assess uncertainty, understand probability, recognise trade-offs, consider second-order consequences and make defensible choices when certainty is impossible.

Corporate learning data reinforces the strategic dimension of the problem. LinkedIn’s 2025 Workplace Learning Report found that 49% of learning and talent-development professionals surveyed said their executives were concerned that employees did not have the right skills to execute business strategy. LinkedIn also identified business strategy as the most at-risk skill in its analysis of skills affected by employee movement, with strategic planning among other difficult-to-replace capabilities requiring critical thinking, the ability to work with uncertainty and institutional knowledge. These findings reveal a significant organisational challenge. Companies may possess sophisticated strategic plans and powerful technologies while still struggling to execute because people cannot consistently translate strategy into sound choices and coordinated action.

These developments reveal a potential gap in the existing professional education market. Many programmes focus on individual components of effective thinking. One course may teach strategic thinking, another critical thinking, another leadership, another decision analysis and another risk management. Each capability has value, but senior professionals frequently encounter situations in which several of these capabilities must operate simultaneously. A complex executive decision may require strategic perspective, critical analysis, systems thinking, uncertainty assessment, stakeholder awareness and judgment about consequences. The market opportunity therefore lies increasingly in integrated cognitive development rather than isolated skill acquisition. The professional of the future may need an architecture of thinking rather than another disconnected collection of techniques.

This also explains why conventional leadership training may be insufficient for some segments of the market. Leadership programmes commonly address communication, team management, emotional intelligence, influence, organisational culture and people development. Those capabilities remain important. Senior decision-makers, however, face another layer of responsibility: determining what should be done when there is no obvious answer. A chief executive deciding whether to enter a new market, a government leader responding to an economic crisis, a financial executive assessing a major risk or a technology leader determining how quickly to deploy an AI system all confront consequential choices. Such decisions require more than interpersonal leadership. They require judgment under pressure, strategic reasoning and the ability to navigate competing consequences.

The commercial implications for professional education are significant. The market increasingly spans mass-market learning, professional development and premium executive education. Mass-market platforms have demonstrated the enormous appetite for accessible skills-based learning, while professional learning providers have established strong demand for structured career development and workplace capability.

At the premium end, executive education competes on depth, credibility, practical application, intellectual frameworks and relevance to complex organisational problems. An important opportunity exists between conventional online courses and elite business-school education. Professionals increasingly want more depth than a short introductory course, while many cannot access or justify the cost of traditional executive education. That creates room for rigorous, accessible premium programmes focused on complex professional problems.

The strongest opportunity may exist at the intersection of AI capability and human judgment. The future of professional learning does not require choosing between teaching people to use AI and teaching them to think critically. The more compelling proposition is to develop professionals who can do both. Such professionals can use AI to expand their analytical capacity while retaining responsibility for evaluating evidence, questioning assumptions, assessing risks and determining appropriate action.

This creates a new form of professional competence: the ability to operate effectively when human reasoning and machine intelligence interact. As AI becomes increasingly embedded in organisational decision-making, this capability could become relevant across business, government, finance, technology, development organisations and other sectors.

The global learning market is therefore moving toward a more sophisticated understanding of professional capability in an AI-driven economy. Artificial intelligence will continue to generate enormous demand for technical education, and that demand is unlikely to disappear. At the same time, evidence from employers and learning platforms suggests that analytical thinking, critical thinking, strategic thinking, adaptability and decision-making are becoming increasingly important.

The central opportunity is not to resist technological change but to develop the human capabilities required to direct it intelligently. The next generation of professional education may consequently be defined less by the ability to produce more information and more by the ability to make sense of information, challenge assumptions, navigate uncertainty and choose wisely when the consequences matter. In that environment, judgment is no longer simply a personal leadership quality. It is becoming an economic capability and potentially one of the most valuable professional skills of the AI age.
