Prince Yahaya Audu is the younger brother of a late former Governor of Kogi State, Abubakar Audu, who died on the verge of winning while seeking to be re-elected as governor on the platform of the APC in 2015. In this interview, Prince Yahaya said both Gov. Yahaya Bello and the ruling party have not reached out to them for any political patronage.

Can you share some of the roles you played during the governorship election that brought Gov. Yahaya Bello to power in 2015?

It is not a hidden secret that we played a key role to the emergence of Gov. Yahaya Bello as governor. We were one of the staunch and fundamental members of APC party in Kogi state. We were members of the party with President Muhammadu Buhari right from ANPP days. It’s not a hidden secret how many votes APC got from Kogi State; neither are they unaware of the role we played in the votes that brought Yahaya Bello to where he is today.

Over two years after the demise of Abubakar Audu, how is the family faring?

We are still waiting, but we are yet to receive anything; but we believe they are still doing something to reach out to us. On my return during the demise of my mother on the May 3, 2018, my meeting with some of the family and party members revealed that nothing has been done so far, but I do believe they are making arrangement to do something.

What will be your appeal to the APC leadership at state and national levels?

We have been unable to sustain some of the things we were used to because of what was spent during the 2015 elections. But I do believe they are thinking about it.

What has been your level of participation in party politics since the death of your brother?

If we talk of politics in Kogi State, we are talking of the Audus, the first executive governor of the state. We have always been participating fully; you don’t start dancing before the drum starts beating. The election has not started, but now that it’s gearing up, we are set.

Right from day one, Yahaya Bello can attest to my speech during the award night of the 25th anniversary of the state. I paid allegiance to him and support to his government and the leadership of APC; and till date, as the leader of the family, I am still a strong member of the party.

How would you assess the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari?

It is obvious, his manifesto was very clear that on assumption of office he was going to take Boko Haram by the horn and he did. If we are fair to him, within six months of assuming office he was able to bring Boko Haram to their knees and they have been driven far away to the forest.

Today, you and I are sitting in Abuja with confidence and peace, but prior to his administration, we could not sleep in Abuja with our two eyes closed. It is obvious that a country as big as Nigeria, with a population of over 150 million people, cannot have absolutely 100 per cent security; the situation is the same even in developed countries. I would say there has been great improvement, but there is room to do better.
