Ankpa Local Government football team are champions of the 2018 Igala Nations Cup decided over the weekend in the heart of the Igala land -Idah.
Team Ankpa defeated Igalamela/Odolu team who were also finalist last year by 2-0 to be crowned champions.
One goal each in the two halves from strikers Ilemona Sule, 23 minutes and Nasiru Umar in the 82nd minutes sealed victory for Ankpa LGA.
The just concluded 2018 Igala Nations Cup is the 2nd edition and was orgarnized in an attempt by organizers to encourage grassroots football development in the area.
The game played at the Qua-Iboe United Evangelical Church Primary School Idah, was witnessed by an unprecedented crowd which had in attendance the Attah of of Igala, His Royal Majesty Idakwo Ameh Oboni the second represented by Chief Isaac Achimugu Tokula (Abago to the Achado Igala ), Chief of Staff to Kogi State Governor, Hon. edward Onoja who was ably represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Honourable Sani Ogu Salisu, the man behind ‘the Mask’ former director and head of marketing of Nigeria Football Federation, comrade Idris Adama, former Nigerian international footballer and president of NNL club side ,Kogi United, Abdul Sule and many other dignitaries.
Tairu Onega of Igala- Mela FC emerged overall best player, best goalkeeper went to Wisdom Ojonimi Ocheni of Ibaji FC, best defender award went to Ugbede Enemali of Omala FC, Attah Awal of Ofu FC earned the highest goals scorer award, while coach of the victorious side, Ankpa, Suleiman Adamu was adjudged tournament’s best tactician.
The nine local governments that constitute the Igala land as a Nation took part in the championship.
The Igala Nations Cup is a youth soccer development initiative to create robust opportunity for talent identification and to promote skills and capacity building through learning an advancement for future career, using the power of the game of football.
