The Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi will tomorrow flag off the maintenance dredging of the already dredged Ajaokuta-Onitsha water channels.
This was contained in a statement issued in Lokoja on Thursday by the General Manager, Corporate Affairs of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Mr Tayo Fadile.
According to the statement, the minister will be accompanied by the Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello at the Julius Berger Jetty, Ajaokuta where the flag off is expected to take place at exactly 10’oclock in the morning.
The statement further noted that the maintenance dredging was part of efforts by NIWA to ensure all year round navigation of the River Niger water ways.
While urging the general public, corporate bodies and other critical stakeholders in the transport sector to grace the occasion, Mr Fadile emphasised that the primary purpose of the exercise was to ensure hitch-free navigation of the waterways.
It would be recalled that in 2009, former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in a bid to boost socio-economic activities through the waterways, flagged-off dredging of the lower River Niger and construction of seven additional sea ports across the country.
The ports were to be located in Agenebode, Idah, Yenagoa, Baro, Lokoja,Aguta and Ogbabe.
