Bill Bradley once said, “Leadership is unlocking people’s potential to become better.” This statement aptly describes the transformative leadership of Senator Jibrin Isah Echocho, who represents Kogi East Senatorial District at the National Assembly. In Nigeria today, one of the most pressing challenges is the rising youth unemployment rate, which has contributed to organized crime, drug abuse, and difficulties in accessing tertiary education.
Although various levels of government have made efforts to tackle these issues, Echocho has stood out as a leader who believes that young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow but also of today. His unshakable commitment to youth empowerment has translated into tangible, life-changing initiatives for the people of Kogi East. Before venturing into politics in 2008, Echocho was one of Nigeria’s foremost and most outstanding investment bankers. He was instrumental in mentoring and positioning many young professionals, particularly from Kogi East, into corporate service and governance. Today, some of those he mentored hold top-tier positions in Nigeria’s corporate and public sectors.
As a senator, his contributions have not only addressed immediate social challenges but have also created long-term opportunities for sustainable development among the youth of his constituency.
One of the major social challenges Senator Echocho identified in Kogi East was youth restiveness, drug abuse, and other social vices. The region hosts several higher institutions, including: Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, Federal Polytechnic, Idah, College of Education, Ankpa, Various private tertiary institutions. With such a large population of young people, the prevalence of drug abuse and substance addiction became a significant concern. Recognizing that rehabilitation must precede empowerment, Echocho made a decisive move to facilitate the establishment of a National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Zonal Command in Anyigba.
The establishment of this command center marks a huge step in combating drug abuse, as it now serves as a hub for drug prevention, rehabilitation, and enforcement activities in Kogi East and its surrounding areas. By ensuring the presence of NDLEA officers in the region, Echocho has not only addressed the symptoms of drug addiction but has also provided a framework for tackling the root causes of substance abuse among the youth.
Understanding that security plays a crucial role in economic and social stability, Senator Echocho has invested significantly in law enforcement infrastructure. In an effort to support the state government’s fight against insecurity and maintain a peaceful constituency, he constructed a Police Area Command Office in Anyigba, Dekina LGA. Upon completion, this state-of-the-art facility will provide a conducive working environment for police personnel, ensuring improved security, crime prevention, and better protection for the people and businesses of Kogi East. His proactive approach to security shows his understanding of the direct link between peace, development, and economic prosperity.
After addressing the issue of youth unrest, Senator Echocho took another ambitious step—establishing a world-class Skill Acquisition Centre in Anyigba, Dekina LGA. This fully-equipped training center offers courses in: Creative and artisan skills, Digital and ICT skills, Technical and industrial training, Soap and detergent making, Furniture and carpentry
At the end of each training session, thousands of youths are not only trained but also provided with basic working tools and start-up capital to enable them to launch their businesses immediately. Through this initiative, Echocho has distributed Over 3,000 sewing machines, Hairdressing kits and dryers, Software and tools for digital skills and Other essential materials for entrepreneurship.
Today, many beneficiaries of the Echocho Skill Acquisition Initiative have transitioned from being job seekers to job creators, contributing to the economic development of Kogi East.
Educational institutions in Nigeria often rely on internally generated revenue (IGR) to fund their projects. The Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, once operated a bakery and cashew processing unit, which became moribund due to lack of funding. Recognizing the potential for job creation and self-sustainability, Senator Echocho revamped the facility, equipping it with modern bakery tools and donating a distribution van.
This initiative has not only restored economic activities at the university but has also provided employment for numerous youths, who now earn a living from the bakery operations.
To further boost agriculture and agribusiness, Senator Echocho is currently training over 2,000 youths across Kogi East in agricultural value chains. Each trainee is provided with start-up capital and essential agricultural kits, empowering them to harness the state’s rich agricultural resources for wealth creation.
In line with his belief that financial empowerment is the backbone of self-sufficiency, Senator Echocho has undertaken a massive entrepreneurship initiative. In a recent empowerment program, selected youths from all nine LGAs in Kogi East were trained and given N1 million each as start-up capital. He has also facilitated the employment of hundreds of constituents in various federal MDAs, including Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Nigerian Police Force (NPF), Military and paramilitary agencies
Recognizing the importance of mobility and trade, Senator Echocho has distributed thousands of motorcycles and tricycles to young people across Kogi East. This initiative has Created jobs for commercial riders, Enhanced mobility for small business owners, Boosted local commerce and trade
Senator Echocho has also made significant investments in education, ensuring that students at all levels receive the necessary financial support to succeed. His scholarship scheme has benefited thousands of students, covering Secondary school education, Undergraduate and postgraduate studies, International academic opportunities
Many of these beneficiaries have graduated and are now contributing to society, thanks to Echocho’s commitment to human capital development.
The story of Echocho is that of the people’s leader and a legacy of impact and transformation. Senator Jibrin Isah Echocho’s leadership has been empirically and physically proven to have made more impact on the youth than any other senator from Kogi East since the return of democracy. His open-door policy has made his office and residence a home for all constituents, further reinforcing his accessibility, transparency, and genuine concern for the people.
As the next election cycle approaches, the youth of Kogi East are ready, determined, and committed to ensuring that their liberator and visionary leader remains in office. Echocho is not just a senator; he is a transformational figure shaping the future of Kogi East, one empowered youth at a time.
Conclusively, Senator Jibrin Isah Echocho’s leadership embodies the principle that true governance is about unlocking people’s potential to become better. Through his tireless efforts in youth empowerment, job creation, security enhancement, skill development, and educational support, he has proven that leadership is about service, vision, and impact.
Kogi East has indeed found in him a leader who does not just make promises but delivers on them, ensuring that the young people of today truly become the leaders of tomorrow.
