The Standup for Women Society has hailed the remarkable progress made by the federal and state governments towards gender equality, adding that more needs to be done to actualize the dream for equity

The International President of the Standup For Women Society, Barr. Deborah Ijadele-Adetona in her message to mark the 2025 International Women’s Day said despite the advancements, society against gender inequality, inequality, and empowerment of women and girls have continued to face unprecedented threats worldwide, from growing discrimination to weaker legal protections and reduced funding for programs that support women.

Ijadele-Adetona’s message, made available to newsmen by the National Public Relations Officer, Lib. Billie Nwogu, called on government and corporate bodies to improve their support for women-based non governmental organizations (NGOs).

While acknowledging the significant improvement in Nigeria, especially the appointment of women into some sensitive quarters, the SWS called for total support for women to be elected in elective positions

The Standup for Women Society called on governments, corporations, and individuals to Accelerate Action towards achieving gender equality and equity.

“The urgency of this moment cannot be overstated and in solidarity with women and girls everywhere, we recognize that gender equity is not only a fundamental human right but also a cornerstone of sustainable development, peace, and prosperity.

“We must invest in education, healthcare, and economic empowerment programs that enable women and girls to reach their full potential.

“We urge governments to adopt and implement legislation to end violence against women and girls, in all its forms.

“We must work towards achieving full and equal decision-making power for women, including through temporary special measures like gender quotas.

“And as we move forward, we draw inspiration from the countless women and girls who are leading the charge for change,” Barr. Deborah added.

SWS reaffirmed its commitment to protecting women’s rights, promoting empowerment, and ensuring equal opportunities.
