On behalf of the academic community at the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, I join Kogi state and the nation in celebrating the exceptional achievements of our distinguished Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Professor Olu Obafemi (NMOM), on his recent conferment as Emeritus Professor of the University of Ilorin.

Professor Olu Obafemi’s life and career are a beacon of inspiration to all who seek to use knowledge and creativity to transform society. A laureate of the prestigious Nigerian National Order of Merit (NMOM) and a celebrated scholar, playwright, and poet, Professor Obafemi has left an indelible mark on academia, literature, and public service. His elevation as Emeritus Professor is a fitting recognition of a life dedicated to excellence, intellectual rigor, and national development.

Born into humble beginnings, Professor Obafemi exemplifies resilience, determination, and brilliance. Rising from his early challenges, he charted a path of academic distinction, culminating in his role as a towering figure in Nigerian literature and cultural discourse. His literary contributions, including celebrated works like Dark Times Are Over? and Scapegoats and Sacred Cows, capture the socio-political complexities of our nation with depth and originality. His scholarship on posthumanism and his ability to merge intellectual inquiry with creative expression further highlight his visionary approach to the arts and humanities.

Beyond his literary and academic achievements, Professor Obafemi has demonstrated exemplary leadership in education and governance. As the Chairman of the Governing Council and Pro-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, until 2023, he provided visionary guidance that propelled the institution to greater heights. He now brings that same transformative leadership to CUSTECH, Osara, inspiring us to pursue innovation, excellence, and global relevance.

Professor Obafemi’s legacy is also marked by his numerous fellowships and recognitions. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL), the Nigerian English Studies Association, the Society of Nigerian Theatre Artists (SONTA), and the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), among others. These honors reflect his pivotal role in advancing literature, language, and the arts in Nigeria. His recent conferment of a Doctor of Letters degree by the Federal University Lokoja is yet another testament to the profound respect he commands in academic and literary circles.

Through his unwavering dedication to knowledge and service, Professor Obafemi has become a symbol of excellence and a source of pride to our nation. As we celebrate this well-deserved recognition by the University of Ilorin, we at CUSTECH are privileged to have his leadership and mentorship as we strive to build a world-class institution that reflects the values he embodies.
