Indecency in the mode of dressing is a rampant phenomenon amidst Nigeria youth these days.
Research made it known that these type of of immodest dressing is once uncommon in Nigeria but today is part of the Nigerian youths and these act is one of the major case of immorality such as rape, sexual assault amongst others.
These indecent dressing is often referred to as “slaying”, “dripping” respectively among Nigerian youths both male and female. Such class of dressing include, bum short, mini skirt, cleavages e.t.c
In order to stop this inappropriate act in 2008,the then chairman of senate committee on women and youth Senator Eme ufot Ekaefe presented a bill on immodest dressing titled, “An act to prohibit and punish public nudity,sexual intimidation and related offenses”. A proposed jail term of six months was imposed for offenders in the bill but it was condemned by humanitarian organizations.
In public indecent appearance has now characterized the dress pattern of many youth most especially student in tertiary institution. These is hardly no higher learning institution in Nigeria that is not faced with this immoral act.
These are various ways in which indecent dressing can be reduced drastically in the society at least at minimum level.
Parents should always dress modesty and act as role model for their children and always monitor their children’s dressing.
Religious scholar should also lay emphasis on decency in their place of worship.
The mass media should also use their social responsibility function by promoting important of decency and negative of fact of indecency among youths and there should be formation of campus brigades to check the dressing pattern of students.
Without doubt, this will reduce indecency in the country.
