Kogi Communities Seek Assistance Over Flood Disasters

Some communities affected by flood disasters in Lokoja and Kogi-Kotonkarfe areas of Kogi State have appealed to both the state and federal governments to come to their assistance.

North Central Trust reports that flood have destroyed houses and washed away farmlands in villages of Ebwa, Kayinko, Fikara, Ellagi, Ellagan, Ekkan, Yaro, Edeku, Kuchelu Kukaragi, Rambagi, Migegi, Kpoku, Para Bushi, Kapu, Agini, Ebbe, Kinami and others around the riverine areas of Kupa district in Lokoja local council.

National President of Kupa Development Association, Abdulmalik Saidu, who spoke on the situation, said the affected people of the communities were under precarious condition.

“Though, no human casualty was recorded in terms of death, the victims are facing precarious situation.

“However, the need for food, shelter and essential non-food items remains high among those displaced and in the villages where communities continue to reside in the water.

“In respect to the above, we are calling on government at all levels and other relevant agencies such as NEMA and SEMA to quickly come to our aid most especially as the governorship election approaches in November”, he said.

In similar vein, a resident of Kotonkarfe in Kogi local government area, Shaibu Ibrahim, lamented that many of them have been displaced from their communities following flood disaster.

He named some of the affected communities to include Edeha, Adabode, Akpaku, Ozahi, Okpaka and Kpakpazi, amongst others.

Ibrahim called on the relevant humanitarian agencies at both the state and federal levels to urgently come to their aid.

Our correspondent reports that flood has continued to wreak havoc across communities in the nine flood prone LGAs.

The local government areas where flood has sacked several communities include Ajaokuta, Lokoja, Ibaji, Igalamela, Idah, Bassa, Kogi-Kotonkarfe, Ofu and Omala.
