ActionAid Inaugurates Peace Club in Kogi Schools

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello has commended ActionAid Nigeria for its numerous interventions aimed at promoting peace in the state.
Bello gave the commendation while inaugurating the ActionAid Peace Club in pilot schools in Kogi State on Monday.
Represented by the Special Adviser on Health, Dr. Ahmed Attah, the governor stated that ActionAid has set the pace for peace in Kogi state.
He stated that peace cannot thrive without adequate security and that was what motivated the Kogi State government to devout time and resources to ensure the state is peaceful and well secured.
Bello tasked members of the peace club in pilot schools to be agents of peace in their respective schools and in all they do.
Earlier, the wife of the governor, represented by Hon. Bolanle Amupitan, launched the ActionAid mentor’s guide for the peace club initiative.
In her keynote address, the ActionAid Nigeria country director, Mrs. Ene Obi explained that the mentor’s guide will help them resolve their own conflict amicably at schools, homes and in the community and to carry out disputes and conflict prevention management in schools.
Represented by Mr. Oluwole Elegbede, Obi stated that the Participation Initiative For Behavioural Change in Development (PIBCID) and ActionAid Nigeria in collaboration with Office of the Special Adviser to Kogi State Government on Education and Kogi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and other stakeholders, put together the participatory toolkit that will contribute to peace building and the creation of more enabling environment where young people can actively channel their energies into positive endeavours towards national development and peaceful co-existence.

In her remarks, the executive director of PIBCID, Mrs. Gift Omoniwa noted that the project is self sustaining where the teachers of each schools will serve as mentors. She added that the project is designed to spread across the State.

The Peace Club is designed to empower teachers and pupils with skills and knowledge of peace and conflict resolution. The clubs will start in selected schools in Igalamela-Odolu, Adavi and Lokoja local government areas.
