The Commandant of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), Kogi State Chapter, Comrade Hassan Yusuf decry the ill treatment of the Nigeria Vigilante Group by the Kogi State Vigilante Service and the Nigeria Police as well as heading its Lokoja LGA Command by a non-indigene.
The Commandant stated this today when the Group paid a courtesy visit to the Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Umar Ahmed Imam who is the Member representing Lokoja I State Constituency, at his G.R.A residence.
According to Comrade Hassan, the Nigeria Vigilante Group is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission and authorized to operate in all the 36 states of the Federation with the Kogi State Chapter having 3,125 members.
While highlighting the purpose of the visit, Comrade Hassan explained that, the group has been sidelined after her diligent and selfless contribution to the successful establishment of the Kogi State Vigilante Service.
He said some officials of the Nigeria Vigilante Group were recently arrested and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) over a Petition by some faceless individuals on trump up charges unknown to the Group, adding that to bail themselves out cost them huge sum of money. He however, commended HRM, Alh. (Dr.) Muhammadu Kabiru Maikarfi III, the Maigari of Lokoja for his intervention in resolving the matter amicably.
While reacting to their grouse, the Speaker condemned the arrest and detention of some of his members saying it’s unacceptable.
He also frowned at the Kogi State Vigilante Service’s choice of Commandant for Lokoja Command, saying “I am surprise to see that the Commandant is not a Lokoja person”, adding that “the essence of community policing/vigilante service is to get someone who is familiar with the community” to give it a leadership direction.
As part of his commitment to meeting the welfare of his people, the Speaker pledged to defray the amount they paid to bail themselves out while encouraging them to come up with a Bill on Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) for consideration by the State Assembly to lessen their work.
