Residents of Lokoja have called on the authorities of the council under the leadership of Hon Shiru Lawal to enforce environmental sanitation laws.
A cross section of residents who spoke with this reporter, today, said the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, which was launched by the state Governor, Alh Yahaya Bello was a welcome development.
They said there was the need for the council authorities to follow up with sensitisation programme in order to enhance residents’ awareness on the issue.
A resident, Malam Usman Ali had attributed the sanitation challenges, especially within the state capital to the inability of the council, to enforce the environmental laws.
He noted that the re-introduction of the monthly sanitation across the 21 Local Government areas by the Governor was a step in the right direction, even as he expressed concern over indiscriminate refuse disposal by some residents;
“There is the need for council authorities to also create designated areas where some of these refuse would be dumped and evacuated at the appropriate time”, he said.
Another resident, Hajiya Ramatu Ibrahim,noted that since the Administrator had shown commitment to promoting sanitation in the State Capital, there was the need for the council authorities to also live up to expectations.
“It is good that Shiru is starting on a good note. We have seen situations in the state Capital previously, where a refuse dump will almost cover the entire road without being evacuated.
Since the introduction of monthly sanitation by the present leadership in Lokoja,there’s departure from what we’ve witnessed before.
She appealed to the state Governor on the need to ensure that money is released every month to evacuate the refuse,” she said.
She commended the Administrator for his commitment in ensuring that Lokoja Local Government, especially the state capital,maintained sanitary environment.
The monthly exercise which was observed today witnessed total compliance ,with the Administrator accompanied by security agents went round to monitor the exercise.
