THE Yagba West Local Government Legislative Council in Kogi State has passed a notice of impeachment on the Vice Chairman, Hon Omoniyi Adeyemi, on allegation of financial impropriety among other alleged offences.
The legislative council passed the notice today, Thursday 11th February, following a plenary sitting at the Council Secretariat, followed a motion moved by the Majority Leader of the Council, Hon. Femi Babalola and seconded by Hon Oluwafemi Adeyeye.
Councilors, in the motion, alleged that the Vice Chairman carried out table payment to staff of the council, while he held sway between May and July 2013 and that proceeds from the payment were not returned to the council’s coffers, an action that they said is contrary to Nigeria’s legal provisions.
It was also alleged that the legislative council experienced persistent frustration in carrying out their oversight functions due to the strong arm tactics employed by Hon Adeyemi.
Part of the letters of the notice reads: “The Council was denied the right to carry out its statutory oversight function, especially as regards SURE-P projects which is a violation of Section 22 (4c) of the Kogi State Local Government Law.”
The Councillors further alleged that the Vice Chairman occupied the position of an Executive Chairman in an unconstitutional manner thereby rendering all activities in his period of leadership as unrecognized by governance laws of the country, state and Local Government.
The councilors also contend that the debts allegedly paid by the Vice Chairman to phony individuals were illegal and that the claim was used by Hon Adeyemi to siphon money meant for the development of the council.
Efforts made by the our reporter to reach the Vice Chairman to hear his side of the story proved abortive as his mobile number was either switched off or not reachable before the story went to Press.
