Congress (APC), retired Air Vice Marshal Saliu Atawodi, Barr. Dangana Ocheja, a serving member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ismaila Husseini and senator-elect, Hon. Dino Melaye molested him while on election monitoring in his local government area of origin, during the re-run state Assembly.
He said that he was at Okpachala in Igalamela/Odolu Local Government Area when thugs and policemen invaded the place, adding that he was attacked by hoodlums loyal to the APC chieftains before he was ordered into their vehicle by the armed policemen. The NUJ chairman wondered why armed policemen would be following big men to intimidate the electorate at polling units, describing the development as the highest point of impunity.
He, therefore, enjoined the police top echelon to look into the activities of their officers, which violate the electoral act, so as to save the nation’s democracy.
He said that after taking him round the town in their vehicle, the police released him ‘on self- recognition,’ even as they never told him the offence he committed.
He said the behaviour of the APC chieftains posed a serious threat to the nation’s democracy, adding that the citizens, no matter their status, suppose to operate within the law.
