Following the April 19, 2013 ethnic crisis between Ebira and Igala students which led to the killing of a senior lecturer, Mr Nathaniel Abimaje, the management of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, has suspended all tribal unions in the institution.
The rector, Professor Matthew Ajibero who announced the suspension while on sensitization tour of the campus condemned the incident that happened on April 19, 2013.
He told the students that the school was re-opened on a compassionate ground based on appeals from major stakeholders. He further told the students that if there is any crisis again, the school would be closed down indefinitely.
The rector who noted that you can only start a problem but will not know how it would end, advised the students to report any breach of the law to the security unit or the appropriate authorities. He told the students that nobody should report a fellow student to Man-O-War as that is not part of their mandate.
Prof Ajibero prayed God to expose the people that killed the late lecturer, Mr Nathaniel Abimaje. He lamented that a peaceful man who went out of the comfort of his home to advise students to shun violence was himself consumed in the violence. The rector, who was visibly angry with the students, said henceforth, anybody found wanting would be shown the way out of the institution.
