The GYB Model Science Secondary School, Lokoja has emerged winners of the 11th edition of the State National Quiz Competition on the Legislature and Democracy organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) for secondary schools in Kogi State.
Announcing the results after a keenly contested competition, the Quiz Master , Mr. Emmanuel Atakpo, ESQ announced the GYB Model Science Secondary School Lokoja as the winner having scored a total of 50 points to defeat the first and second runners up ,Mater Misericordia International Secondary School, Anyigba and Our Lady of Schools, Anyigba with 45 and 40 points respectively.
The Competition which was held at the GYB Model Science Secondary School Lokoja on Tuesday has six schools, two each from the three senatorial districts competing. The Our Lady of Schools, Anyigba and Mater Misericordia International Secondary School, Anyigba from the East, Government Science Secondary School, Ogaminana and Glory Comprehensive Secondary School, Adavi-Eba from Central, GYB Model Science Secondary School, Lokoja and Julitola International Secondary School, Lokoja from the West.
In his address, the Director General National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies, Professor Abubakar Olanrewaju Suleiman stated that the competition is to promote awareness and understanding of Legislature , Democracy and Governance among young Nigerian and to nurture in them the values of participation, accountability and patriotism.
He noted that the competition is not just an academic exercise but a deliberate investment in the future of Nigerian democracy; noting that students will gain insight into how laws are made and how the rule of law matters.
The Director General who was represented by the State Coordinator of the program Mr. Musa Haruna said the NILDS will continue to champion the initiative that will address apathy, misinformation and intolerance facing the democratic governance in the Country.
He called on the participating schools to compete with passion, fairness and humility; adding that the knowledge learned from the exercise should go beyond the Quiz Competition.
In his welcome address, the Director Basic and Secondary Education, Kogi State Ministry of Education Mr. Salami Ere Matthew noted that the competition will deepen the students understanding of democracy, good governance , the Legislature and Civic responsibility.
He commended the NILDS for sustaining the competition for the eleven consecutive edition and called on the students to give their best and ensure that fair play, confidence and excellence guide them through out the competition.
