Beauty and the Beast: When Nigerian Marriage Turns Love Into a Battleground

Marriage was supposed to be a shelter, but in some Nigerian homes, the roof becomes a battlefield. Behind wedding photographs and public smiles, unholy behaviours quietly flourish, turning husbands into self appointed lords and wives into reluctant slaves.

Some men enter marriage believing the wedding ring is a coronation. They demand unquestioned obedience, dictate every decision, control finances, silence disagreement and invoke tradition whenever convenient. But biblical headship is stewardship, not dictatorship; authority without sacrificial love becomes tyranny.

The Bible does not present marriage as a throne where one spouse rules while the other crawls beneath it. Scripture commands husbands to love sacrificially, just as Christ loved the Church. A husband cannot demand the privileges of headship while rejecting the responsibilities of Christlike service.

The tragedy is that communication often becomes a broken bridge. Pride becomes ammunition, silence becomes punishment, anger becomes intimidation, and yesterday’s grievances are resurrected whenever today’s argument needs reinforcements. What should be partnership gradually degenerates into emotional warfare.

Yet marriage cannot survive indefinitely as a prison decorated with wedding photographs. Cultural expectations may demand endurance, but endurance without wisdom can become slow emotional suffocation. A home should not become a beautiful cage simply because society applauds the marriage.

Nigerian marriages need more than ceremonies, titles and cultural expectations; they need character. Biblical marriage demands love, humility, responsibility, fidelity, mutual honour and sacrificial service. A husband is not called to manufacture a slave; he is called to love a wife, and both are called to honour God.
