Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, Convener and Director-General of the Okun Agenda Global Network and Social Democratic Party (SDP) senatorial candidate for Kogi West, has paid glowing tribute to Senator Jonathan Babatunde Ogbeha, CON, mni, as the elder statesman marks his 79th birthday.
In a statement, Aiyenigba described Senator Ogbeha as a decorated soldier, seasoned diplomat, and distinguished lawmaker whose career has spanned the military, public administration, and the National Assembly. Before his retirement, Ogbeha rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the Nigerian Army. He later served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Equatorial Guinea and as military governor of both Akwa Ibom State and the old Bendel State.
Aiyenigba noted that Ogbeha played a pivotal behind-the-scenes role in the creation of Kogi State, leveraging his close relationship with former military president General Ibrahim Babangida to advocate for the state’s establishment.
As a senator representing Kogi West across the 4th and 5th National Assemblies, Ogbeha chaired the Senate Committee on Water Resources and was recognized as one of the chamber’s more outspoken voices. Aiyenigba recalled a notable 2005 public address in which the senator criticized undemocratic actors he termed “cowboys” for undermining Nigeria’s constitutional order — remarks that underscored his reputation for candour in public affairs.
The tribute also highlighted Ogbeha’s investments outside government, particularly his establishment of the Confluence Cable Network and its flagship station, Grace FM — the first private radio station in Kogi State. According to Aiyenigba, the media venture has created jobs and contributed meaningfully to economic and social life in Lokoja and across the state.
Aiyenigba further praised Ogbeha’s humility and his voluntary decision to step down after two Senate terms, a move he described as a demonstration of the senator’s commitment to equity and the rotation of political power within the district. He recounted a personal visit to Ogbeha’s home, during which the senator readily assisted in facilitating a meeting related to a book project involving former Senate President David Mark — an encounter Aiyenigba cited as emblematic of Ogbeha’s generosity and accessibility.
“His records of service and good name continue to inspire generations,” Aiyenigba said, describing Ogbeha as a respected statesman whose influence remains strong in Kogi State’s political space and the Western Senatorial District long after leaving public office.
Aiyenigba joined family members, associates, and admirers in wishing Senator Ogbeha continued good health and many more fulfilling years.
