How the former Kogi Governor restored the dignity of the Ohinoyi Palace and gave Ebiraland a befitting royal heritage
For decades, the ancient palace of the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland stood as a painful reminder of neglect. Built during the colonial era, the ancestral home of Anebira, the highest traditional institution in Ebiraland, had deteriorated so badly that it was virtually uninhabitable and, at some point, reportedly became a hideout for hoodlums and other illicit activities.
For more than 40 years, Ebiraland was effectively without a befitting palace for its paramount traditional ruler. The situation became so embarrassing that the Ohinoyi was forced to operate from his private residence, leaving generations of Ebira people without the royal edifice that should symbolise their history, identity, unity and traditional authority.
It was against this backdrop that former Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, intervened decisively.
