- Bello enters 2027 Senate race with grassroots structure, name recognition and political experience

As political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 Kogi Central Senatorial election, former Governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello enters the race with advantages that opposition candidates may find difficult to overcome.
Bello is not a newcomer seeking to build political relevance from scratch. His eight years as governor created a broad network of political associates, supporters, community stakeholders, youths and women across Kogi State, with a strong presence in Kogi Central.
In a senatorial election, political strength is ultimately measured by the ability to reach voters at the ward, community and polling-unit levels.
Bello’s supporters believe his existing structure gives him a significant head start. While other aspirants may still be building their teams, Yahaya Bello already has a network capable of taking his message directly to the people.
His name also carries considerable recognition across Kogi Central. Voters are already familiar with his leadership style, political journey and record as governor.
For his supporters, the 2027 election will therefore be less about introducing a new politician and more about asking voters whether Yahaya Bello’s experience and record qualify him to represent them in the Senate which the Kogi central residents have longed answered in affirmative.
Yahaya Bello’s supporters are presenting his Senate ambition as a transition from executive leadership to effective legislative representation.
Having governed the state, they argue that he understands government processes, budgeting, infrastructure, security and the workings of both state and federal institutions.
Ultimately, the 2027 contest may not be determined by how many candidates the opposition produces, but by who can connect with the people, mobilise the grassroots and deliver effective representation.
And that is why, in the eyes of Yahaya Bello’s supporters, 1,000 opposition candidates may still struggle to match the political weight of Yahaya Bello in Kogi Central.
