A nation that asks its soldiers to stand between civilization and chaos must never leave those guardians standing alone. Every society is ultimately defended not merely by weapons, but by the courage, discipline, and sacrifice of the men and women who carry them. The strength of a nation begins where the resolve of its soldiers remains unbroken.
The decision by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government to raise the daily operational allowance of Nigerian soldiers to ₦9,000, an 80 percent increase is more than a financial adjustment. It is a moral statement, a strategic declaration, and a vital investment in national security. It recognizes that those who sleep in trenches so that others may sleep in peace deserve more than applause; they deserve tangible appreciation.
Nations rise or fall according to how they treat those entrusted with their defence. Soldiers are not ordinary public servants. They walk into danger when others flee from it. They confront terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, and insurgents under conditions that test the limits of human endurance. To reward such sacrifice is not generosity; it is justice.
Leadership is measured by its ability to balance compassion with responsibility. A government that improves the welfare of its troops is not merely adjusting budgets; it is strengthening the invisible bond of trust between the state and those who defend it. Loyalty grows where sacrifice is respected.
Every act of honour shown to those who protect innocent lives reflects a timeless principle: those who labour for the safety of others deserve encouragement. A grateful nation attracts greater commitment, because appreciation inspires dedication.
This increase also signals that national security cannot be sustained through rhetoric alone. Modern threats require motivated personnel whose welfare reflects the value the nation places on their service. Strong armies are built not only with sophisticated equipment but also with confident, respected, and motivated soldiers.
Military leadership and organizational behaviour consistently demonstrate that improved welfare enhances morale, operational effectiveness, commitment, and resilience. Personnel who feel valued are more focused, disciplined, and driven to accomplish difficult missions. While no allowance can fully compensate for the risks borne by those on the front lines, this increase sends a reassuring message: their sacrifices are seen, and they are acknowledged. It strengthens confidence within the armed forces and reinforces public trust in a government willing to invest in those who defend the nation.
For President Tinubu, Nigeria’s soldiers carry the weight of our collective security. They deserve not only our prayers and patriotic speeches but also practical policies that reflect the true value of their service. The increase of the daily operational allowance to ₦9,000 is therefore more than a budgetary decision. It is an affirmation that courage deserves recognition, sacrifice deserves reward, and those who defend Nigeria deserve a nation that stands firmly behind them.
