Iko Halidu has won the first medal for Team Kogi state at the ongoing 2017 National Youth Games after grabbing a silver medal in the traditional sport, Ayo, on Sunday.
The medal puts Kogi state in the fourth position on the medal table behind Ondo, Bauchi, and Kano at the University of Ilorin ground.
In his reaction, state Director of Sports, Abraham Onekutu is delighted at the development and expects more medals from top contenders in coming days.
He commended the timely intervention of the state government through the Commissioner for Sports, Arome Adoji on making their participation a reality.
“Our boy lost narrowly to his opponent by 3-4 points but all the same we are happy. This is the first time Kogi is winning a medal in Ayo at the Youth Games,” said Onekutu.
“Tomorrow [Monday], We have confidence Kogi will bring more medals in judo, wrestling and athletics. We have more medal winning prospects among some players.”
