Heavily armed gunmen, on Tuesday, attacked and robbed United Bank for Africa, (UBA), First bank and Zenith bank simultaneously in Ankpa, Kogi state.

No less than two persons lost their lives to stray bullets as the dare-devil robbers shot sporadically throughout the operation.

One of the victims, Alaba Orenisi, was the manager at one of the two Egoja gas plants in Ankpa where he used to take their daily sales to bank.

According to an eye witness, “Alaba was on his way to bank when they heard gun shots and they all ran into the police station which was not far away from the not knowing that the robbers were coming to the station first to destabilise the police. It was there in the station that he was hit by stray bullet.”

Also, a young female university graduate, Ummu, fell to stray bullets from the robbers as well.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Office, SP William Ovye Aya said the Commissioner of Police, CP Edward Egbuka, has led a team of tactical operatives to the scenes for on-the-spot assessment.

According to him, “the Commissioner has equally ordered the deployment of additional operational assets consisting of operatives of the Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorism Unit, Quick Response Unit, State Intelligence Bureau in synergy with other security agencies to restore normalcy in the area.

“The Police personnel on duty both at the station and the banks quickly recovered from the sudden attack and gallantly repelled the attackers who were forced to flee. Some ran into nearby bushes, others with their vehicles. The hoodlums abandoned three vehicles used for the operation in their haste to escape, some of them with bullet wounds.”

While calling on the people of Ankpa and it adjoining communities to be on the lookout and report any body seen with bullet wounds to the Police or any other security forces nearest to them, Aya said the command is committed to working in synergy with other security agencies as well as patriotic stakeholders in the ongoing onslaught against crimes and criminality in Kogi State.

He further tasked the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Investigation Department (SCID) to commence investigations so as to unravel the remote and immediate cause of the act, trail the hoodlums with a view to apprehend and bring them to book.
