Apart from the bacteria which naturally inhabits our buccal cavity, our mouth is attracted to harmful germs and bacteria just like sugar is attracted to ants. Our daily eating habits are just bad enough to invite and allow harmful bacteria to multiply and form plaque. In Africa, one of the early lessons that parents and guardians teach their children and wards is to brush or wash the mouth first thing in the morning, even before saying ‘good morning’ The fact about brushing is that most people do it routinely yet do it wrongly. Brushing or washing the mouth only once every morning is like pressing or ironing a dirty cloth. Harmful germs and bacteria which constantly gets into our mouth from the environment are abound to decompose the food particles in our mouth, the period when we are asleep affords the micro organisms an ample opportunity to carry out their activities, the end point of these decomposition is severely dangerous and harmful to our health.

It is understood that we should go to bed with a clean mouth but we don’t always follow the rules. In addition to the toxins produced from decomposition, every time we have a meal the bacteria that naturally resides in the mouth feasts on the remnant in mouth and Just like every other living organisms these bacteria excretes wastes after a meal. These wastes can be highly acidic and breaks down the tooth enamel, causing cavities and root decay. If you always hit the bed without brushing, plaque starts to harden and calcify in your teeth which gets worse with time. These plaque buildup leads to gum infections, bad breath, bleeding and swollen gums. Not brushing or washing the mouth before bed allows bacteria plaque to mature undisturbed over night, which favors colonization of acid producing bacteria.

Brushing before getting into bed clears and eliminates the remnants of food particles in the mouth thereby reducing the buildup of bacteria in the mouth. Our mouth is bombarded throughout the course of the day with a variety of germs from the environment. It could be from a hot cup of coffee, lip sticks or contaminated tooth picks. Brushing at night prevents periodontal diseases which can lead to tooth shifting, receding gum tissues and even tooth loss.

Brushing or washing the mouth before bed helps keep bacteria in check. Medical study has discovered a link between gum infections and an increase in the risk of respiratory infections. Harmful bacteria from the mouth can be inhaled into the respiratory tracts and lungs exacerbating an infection and causing serious respiratory diseases. Aside from causing stinky mouth odour, bad breath and an unattractive smile, gum diseases is a major indicator of heart disease and the number one cause of tooth loss in adults.

It doesn’t make much sense to only brush every morning when the damage had already been done. For a good oral hygiene, it is healthy to brush the teeth or wash the mouth twice a day. Considering its immense benefits of waking up with a fresh mouth and breath, preventing gum infections, save guarding the heart and the entire respiratory system from infections, If you must brush only once day then it is wise to do it before going to bed.
