Mr Goodness Honour, SS3 student of Demonstration Standard College Onikoko, Okene, on Saturday emerged as the best Scientist in Kogi State in the “21 Kogi Young Scientist Governor’s Award (KYSGA-21) 2018 competition”
The KYSGA-21 is a competition of science students in both private and public secondary schools across the 21 LGAs of Kogi, aimed at encouraging and developing their interest in Science, Technology and Innovation.
The competition was organised by Kogi Ministry of Education, Science & Technology in collaboration with Kogi Wide Academic Excellence Competition (K-WAEC) to mark the “World Science Day 2018”.
Presenting the award to the overall winner, Goodness Honour, in Lokoja, the state’s Commissioner for Education, Science & Technology, Mrs Rosemary Osikoya, said that the competiion was organised to motivate and get more people interested and encourage them to study science and technology.
She said that the competition had enable the state government to get the best scientists in each local council, who further participated in another competition at the five centres at senatorial level and then finally at the state.
She said that the overall winner would represent the state at the “774 Young Nigerian Scientists Presidential Award (YONSPA) 2018” slated for November 22, at the national level.
“I am excited that we are able to create open fairness in the competition and a public school still emerge as overall winner. It is sort of breakdown most of the wrong assumptions about public school.
“We are able to innovate and use scarce resources, and get everybody to work together as a team, and we have achieved alots. It is to tell people that you can still count on Government.
“I am happy that we are able to demonstrate to everybody today that there is still faith in government and that government of Gov. Yahaya Bello has the political will to deliver quality education,” Osikoya said.
Mr Salihu Abubakar, Centre for Atmospheric Research, National Space Research & Development Agency, commended the state government for giving the needed support for the competition, saying science and technology remained the backbone of any nation.
Abubarkar, who is the Acting Head of Engineering Department of the centre, said that the agency was ready to partner with Kogi government for technological development in the state.
The overall winner, Mr Goodness Honour, thanked the State’s Governor and the commisioner for the award, and for giving them the opportunity to express their intellectual ability through the competition.
He said: “I just believe it is the help of the Almighty God coupled with hardwork. I am grateful to God for making me a winner.
“I promise to make Kogi proud at the “774 Young Nigerian Scientists Presidential Award (YONSPA) 2018” slated for November 22, at the national level”.
Mr Ogbonna John, from Dynamic College, Ankpa, and Hassan Shedrach, from Saint Kizito Seminary, Idah, emerged as the second and third winners’ position respectively.
All participants received certificate of participants.
26 schools received awards plaques & gifts for participation and hard work in general;
Five-Centre Champions received award plaques and complete sets of teaching and learning instructional materials for JSS1- SS3- 205 textbooks/workbooks/teacher’s guide and 71 teaching aids- charts;
*In addition, 3 state finalists received laptop computers with learning aides software fully installed.
21 LGA Young Scientists received award plaques and complete sets of textbooks/worksbooks/teacher’s guide for 7 subjects: English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer and Agricultural sciences.
Kogi State Young Scientist (State Champion) will represent Kogi State at the 774 Young Nigerian Scientists Presidential Award 2018 competition in Abuja.
