The Kogi Sanitation and Waste Management Board has attributed the poor sanitary condition of Lokoja and other major towns to inadequate manpower and the lack of modern equipment.

The Director-General of the board, Alhaji Yusuf Yahaya, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Lokoja the reduction of street sweepers from 800 to 130 was largely responsible for the filthy condition of Lokoja, the state capital.

Yahaya said the board could boast of only 99 environmental health officers for the entire state.

He said that the situation made some of its core functions such as house-to-house inspection and the regulation of business premises virtually impossible.

He also said the board had difficulty in carting away refuse from the 44 collection points in Lokoja to dump sites.
