To: The Executive Governor, Kogi State,
His Excellency Alhaji Usman Ododo
I write with profound concern and a deep sense of urgency regarding the recurrent practice of blocking major roads during Friday Jumaat prayers in Lokoja and other parts of Kogi State. It is with heavy hearts that we note the tragic loss of a young man today in Lokoja, a death reportedly linked to the blockage of a road near a mosque. Such incidents not only cause untold grief to families but also pose a grave threat to public safety and the free movement of citizens.
While the spiritual significance of Friday congregational prayers is deeply respected, it is imperative that public safety and unimpeded access to roads are not compromised. Road blockages create life-threatening situations, particularly in emergencies where vehicles—including ambulances—cannot navigate through congested streets.
The recent tragedy underscores the urgent need for a review and immediate adjustment of current practices.
I respectfully urge the State Government and the Federal Road Safety Commission to collaborate with mosque authorities, local councils, and law enforcement agencies to develop and enforce measures that allow Jumaat prayers to take place without obstructing roads. Proposed alternatives may include designated prayer areas, traffic rerouting plans, and clear communication to motorists to prevent future casualties.
The loss of even one life due to preventable measures is one too many. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that the sanctity of worship is preserved without endangering lives or public order. Your immediate intervention will be a demonstration of commitment to the safety and welfare of all citizens in Kogi State.
We appeal for swift action to prevent the recurrence of such heartbreaking incidents.
Yours faithfully,
Yusuf Abdulrahman Ali
The Eagle journalist.
