Barely 15 months in office, Hon. Umar Yahaya, Representative of the Omala State Constituency in the Kogi State House of Assembly, has demonstrated exemplary leadership, proving his capacity to serve with tangible results.
One of his early accomplishments includes the establishment of a new constituency office, a crucial facility designed to facilitate direct communication and engagement between the electorate and their representative. This office serves as a bridge, ensuring that constituents have access to their legislator and that their concerns are promptly addressed.
Hon. Umar Yahaya’s commitment to education is evident through his Educational Support Program, which has significantly impacted the lives of many Omala students. Through this initiative, over 300 indigenes were registered for the JAMB examination, with Hon. Yahaya covering all associated costs. Furthermore, the highest-scoring candidate in the examination receives full tuition sponsorship throughout their studies at any higher institution of their choice within Nigeria, ensuring that financial barriers do not impede academic excellence.
In his efforts to promote sustainable development, Hon. Yahaya has facilitated the installation of solar-powered lights in worship centers across the wards of Omala Local Government Area. This project not only enhances the security of these sacred spaces but also aligns with broader goals of embracing renewable energy solutions for community benefit.
Among the most eagerly awaited projects spearheaded by Hon. Yahaya is the construction of a dual-purpose borehole in the Egbachi area. This initiative will provide residents with access to clean drinking water, while also serving the burial ground, ensuring that the community’s ceremonial needs are met. This project addresses a critical need within the Bassa Okuomu community, which has long required such a facility.
During the holy month of Ramadan, Hon. Yahaya extended his generosity to both Muslims and Christians in Omala Local Government, distributing 3.5 million Naira in cash, 200 bags of rice, clothing, and other essential food items. This palliative effort underscores his commitment to fostering unity and providing support to his constituents, irrespective of their faith.
Hon. Umar Yahaya’s accomplishments in such a short period are numerous and far-reaching. He has empowered over 400 individuals across the eleven wards of Omala, providing cash and farming tools to support their livelihoods. He has also renovated the APC party secretariat, enhancing the operational capacity of the party at the grassroots level.
His legislative efforts have led to the approval of the construction of the Abejukolo township road, a significant infrastructure project that will improve access and connectivity within the constituency.
In the health sector, Hon. Yahaya has initiated the construction of an international-standard cottage hospital in the Ogodu District, addressing critical healthcare needs within the community.
Furthermore, Hon. Yahaya is actively sponsoring the education of 27 students across various tertiary institutions in Kogi State, ensuring that the next generation of leaders and professionals have access to the opportunities they need to thrive.
In addition, Hon. Yahaya has prioritized the empowerment of youth through digital literacy. In 2020, he launched a computer training program across the nine local government areas of Kogi East, equipping over 30 students with laptops and the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
His leadership in security matters is equally noteworthy, as he convened a critical stakeholders’ meeting in Omala, resulting in a comprehensive communiqué that was delivered to the State Governor, addressing pressing security concerns in the region.
The people of Omala, both at home and in the diaspora, have applauded Hon. Umar Yahaya’s impressive track record, recognizing him as one of the most effective legislators the constituency has ever had. No wonder, he was honoured with the prestigious award of Best Lawmaker of the Year 2024. This recognition was conferred on him by the Nigerian Post Newspaper in Lokoja lately. His unwavering commitment to service, development, and progress has earned him widespread respect and admiration.
