“Boldness sparks change. Strategy drives it. But it is patience and consistency that makes greatness endure.”

This is not a mere quote for a man, it is the living testimony of a pragmatist, Chief Edward David Onoja (CEDO), a man who has navigated the minefields of Nigerian politics with a rare combination of loyalty, intelligence, courage, and grace.

As he marks 51 years today, I do not think it should be about fanfare and celebration alone, we should salute and honour his journey, one forged in fire, refined in depths of silence, and rising into a trajectory of purpose and prominence.

The Making of a Political Force from Jos, with Destiny

Long before his radiance of power and public office presence, exuding confidence and influence with a clear insight and understanding, and a magnetic presence that commands attention, CEDO’s political instincts were already burning on the rocky hills of the University of Jos.

Unfolding two defining moments between 1997 and 1999

First, having become the first ever elected President of the Natural Sciences Students Association, breaking old traditions, secondly, he led the historic campaign that produced the first Natural Science student as President of the Student Union Government, a breakthrough in campus politics.

These campus political events horned CEDO’s strategic brilliance, grassroots mobilization expertise and persuasive abilities. And as we know “early fire never dies, it evolves.

Steady Commitment Spanning Two Decades

Long before the advent of All Progressives Congress becoming Nigeria’s ruling party, before it even emerged into a name, CEDO was already deeply entrenched in the political landscape, paving the way with grassroots efforts.

From the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), CEDO’s resolve never wavered, it stood firm. As an early supporter of Muhammadu Buhari, whose popularity later resonated with the masses long before they validated it at the pools, to building bridges for his candidacy in the North Central, his loyalty was never seasonal, it was more than just a phase, demonstrating unwavering dedication that knows no bound.

CEDO has never needed a microphone to prove his convictions or where he stands; his actions consistently spoke louder, demonstrating his stance time and again.

More Than Just a Strategy, CEDO Was a Mission (A Calling)

He ventured into politics driven by a desire to serve and not for personal gain or gratification.

He ran for the Kogi State House of Assembly in 2011 under the All Nigeria Peoples Party.

He mobilized for Prince Audu’s bid under the Action Congress of Nigeria.

And when many opted for the safe route, CEDO made a groundbreaking, albeit contentious, decision rooted in principle. By supporting Kogi’s first non-Igala governor in 2015, he took a bold stand for fairness and justice, defying ethnic lines.

The price he paid was steep, it exacted a heavy toll and came at great personal cost — betrayal, blackmail, and isolation. But they laid bare his true character, it revealed the kind of man he is. A man with foresight, who sees the future over the fleeting moment.

The Voice That Commands Attention

Whenever Chief Edward David Onoja rises to speak, whether in a small gathering, whether in intimate settings, a community town hall or forum, a rousing campaign rally, or the energy of a campaign crowd, something remarkable happens. He possesses a unique gift – the ability to captivate any audience, regardless of their mood, whether hostile, indifferent, or skeptical. His words are carefully crafted, his pauses deliberate, and his gestures meaningful. With only a few well chosen words, he captures everyone’s attention. His delivery is never forced or flashy, yet powerful. It is authentic, moving, and deeply persuasive, leaving a lasting impact on his audience.

Even without preparation, CEDO consistently rises to the moment. By the time he finishes speaking, his words have transformed into conviction, earning trust and inspiring followership.
People believe. They trust. They follow.

In the realm of public speaking, CEDO stands alone and standout – communicating with unwavering conviction, razor-sharp clarity, and genuine connection that resonates deeply.

A Leader Who Served with Substance

As Chief of Staff and later Deputy Governor, he governed with substance, not spectacle, not by noise, but by results. He championed rural development, education for all, and unity across ethnic groups. As campaign Director General, his strategic leadership paid off in 2019, securing almost all National Assembly seat and all 25 State Assembly seats for the first time in Kogi’s political history. Infact for Kogi East where he comes from it was a 100% clean sweep for the APC. One that remains unbroken till date. And a clear testament to the depth of his political sagacity.

CEDO was the trusted figure in moments of political uncertainty, as seen in his role in the All Progressives Congress Gubernatorial Primary Committee in Taraba, and more recently, his appointment to the Board of the South East Development Commission as a representative of the North Central region. But none of these titles represent his most powerful political move.

The Moment Silence Was Stronger Than Words

The attacks intensified in the final months of his service in Kogi – they attacked from every angle, barrage of lies, spiritual manipulation, and betrayal aimed at provoking a reaction. Nonstop efforts to provoke him.
They needed him to react.
Why?
Their aim was clear, goad him into a reaction that would spring a carefully laid trap, one designed to ruin his political career and potentially more. Then came the most unexpected and powerful masterstroke of all time, ‘SILENCE’!

CEDO chose silence. He went completely silent. Yes! Ghost silence. They miscalculated him, and never saw that coming. That further infuriated the schemers. It was a move that left his adversaries stunned, their calculations foiled by his unexpected calm. Their frustration grew as they realized they’d underestimated him. They had no back up plan. Their anger surged, CEDO had outmaneuvered them without uttering a word.

In that silence was not weakness, but great strength. It was not retreat, but resistance on a higher level. And within that stillness, he emerged victorious. That one decision to remain calm, to stay focused, to show discipline did more than confuse his enemies. It attracted national leaders to his side. It revealed his emotional strength and spiritual depth. And it reminded everyone of a simple truth:

“The race of life is not a sprint. It is an unending marathon, and it takes endurance to reach the end.”

A Leader Seen Through the Eyes of Those He Has Led

When we, the national leadership of the Tinubu Renaissance Group, sat with him in a private session on August 6, 2025, we came ready to share ideas.
Instead, we left deeply impacted.

  • His calm way of listening was not the kind that waits to respond, but one that truly seeks to understand.
  • His presence was both relaxed and commanding.
  • His knowledge of Nigeria’s geography, cultures, and political history was unmatched.
  • His ability to detect opposition moves before they even happened was clear.
  • And most impressively, he showed us new strategies and angles we had not yet considered.

After two hours with him, we gained more than direction. We gained energy, focus, and renewed belief. If there is one thing no one can take from CEDO, it is his mind, sharp, curious, and deeply persuasive. He Carries More Than Time. He Carries Purpose

Yes, they tried to bury him.
They tried to drag his name through the mud.
But like clean rain falling on polished stone, the dirt never stayed.

He survived dangers that were both seen and unseen, including threats to his life.
He walked through fire. And he did not only survive. He rose.

As Chief Edward David Onoja turns 51, he does not just carry years. He carries the pain of betrayal, the reward of loyalty, and the blessing of purpose.

He knows one thing for certain:

“A man’s star divinely given can never be stolen nor exchanged by any mortal power. It may face delay. But no one can take what God has designed and destined. Destiny belongs to the Creator alone.”

The Flame is Still Alive
He is not bitter.
He is not broken.
He is becoming.
More focused.
More refined.
More determined to contribute to a better Nigeria. So today, we raise our voices and say with honor and pride:

Happy 51st Birthday to the Steady Flame, Your Excellency Chief Edward David Onoja.

May the next chapter of your life burn brighter, reach farther, and bless more people than the one before. May your sacrifice of love bring forth lasting harvest for you and your generations.

Nigeria still needs people like you.
