Two persons died yesterday when a truck laden with diesel went up in flames, after ramming into some vehicles at Felele area, along the Abuja- Lokoja highway.
We gathered that the driver of the truck and his assistant, who were trapped in the vehicle were burnt beyond recognition.
Our correspondent reports that the incident occurred around 8.30pm and that it took the state Fire Service over four hours to bring the situation under control. It was further gathered that the accident was caused by brake failure.
Two of the three vehicles that were involved in the accident were burnt while about seven shops and a hotel were also affected. The accident caused traffic jam on the highway for hours, before operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps intervened.
Kogi State Deputy Governor, Yomi Awoniyi, said efforts must be made to check accidents on the highway.
Awoniyi, who noted that many people travel through the state on a daily basis, called for caution on the part of drivers. He urged them to adhere to traffic regulations and ensure maintenance of their vehicles.
