The attention of Kogi West Youth Awake (KOWYA) has been drawn to the ineptitude and ludicrous action of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) against Dino Melaye, senator representing the good people of Kogi West Senatorial District.
The siege on the residential property of the senator by officers of the NPF is a restriction to his fundamental human right and restriction of movement to his constituent who may wish to visit, especially during this season of yuletide.
We call on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene by instructing the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to stop this unlawful embarrassment on Senator Dino Melaye (SDM) with immediate effect.
Universal declaration of human rights states that; “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood, No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.” All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law (Not minding party differences).
The declaration further states that: All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination, No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile, Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.
The 1999 Constitution adequately provides for the protection of rights of every citizen. Section 4 of the constitution provides for the right to life, dignity, personal liberty, fair hearing, privacy, freedom of thought, conscience and religion, freedom of expression, movement, discrimination and freedom to own property.
Despite these laudable provisions, several persons continue to suffer deprivation of their rights especially in the hands of security agencies and powers unknown.
NPF must realize that the international community is watching keenly, its effort towards destroying our democracy. What is the crime of our senator?
What are his sins that the NPF has barely allow him to have time with his constituents during this election period? SDM is not there for himself, but rather he is representing the entire people of Kogi West. This implies that the people of Kogi west are been trampled upon by the NPF in proxy of powers unknown. This is a democratic dispensation and we expect the rule of law to rain supreme, we expect the NPF to be professional in its approach to handling such issues by withdrawing from the senator’s residence, while following legal pathways to resolving whatever it is.
STOP THE SIEGE ON SDM’S HOUSE
Signed:
Olorunfemi John Ojo
Chairman, Kogi West Youth Awake (KOWYA)
