To:
His Excellency
Elder Simon Achuba
The Deputy Governor of Kogi State
Today makes it the fifth day after former President Olusegun Obasanjo wrote an open letter to President Mohammadu Buhari.
Ever since the delivery of that letter, other letters have been flying from one pool to another making it obvious that this week and this month is a season of letters.
So, I must write.
If not only to call your attention to the crumbled and bastardized nature of your office, but to at least remind you of your contribution to the continuous mitigation and subjection of the Kogi people, and the unqualifiable level of poverty and suffering you have directly and indirectly join hands with the Yahaya Bello-led government to permit on our people.
In the last two years, you have successfully played a second party to a government that has lost all its moral sense.
Silently watching the exploitation of the Kogi people, the continuous molestation of the civil service, the annihilation of our democracy and the intentional deterioration of the common lives of people and persons living in Kogi state.
His Excellency sir, this on its own is a complete betrayal of not just the office you represent but also of your person and the man in you.
And gradually, like Soyinka noted in the preface of his book, “The Man Died”, indeed the man in you is dead.
For you have remain silent in the face of tyranny, you have become dumb in the face of oppression, you have remained weak in the face nepotism and oligarchy.
In the face of thousands of in-appropriates, man hunting, political negligence, liquidation and obvious abuse of the human person in Kogi state, you have remain silent.
Playing the role of an innocent cockroach, who indeed shares in the pestering of the house.
Your excellency, silence they say is golden, but not at the expense of our integrity. Not at the expense of the common lives of our people, not at the expense of our own future and the future of our children, not at the expense of our hard earn democracy, our hard earn right to equity and dividends of democracy.
With all due respect, such silence is complete cowardice, a total betrayal of the people, the state and the very man in you.
And like I noted in my heritage book “EBULÉJONU”, it is indeed cowardice to resign to fate when the oppressor has not repented.
His excellency, you gave up even before the fight, you seconded even before the motion was moved, you took to your heels even before the confrontation, you died even before the gun was shot at you.
Probably because of selfish gains, or selfish reasons that as long as humanity is concern can never be justified.
But let it be known that you, Simon Achuba was silent when the people needed you to say some thing. Let it be known that you denied the people when they called out to you. Let it be known that you turned your back at the people when they needed you the most. Let it be known that you traded your conscience for silver and gold. Let it be known that you betrayed KOGI for a pot of portage.
And like Koffi Annan said, indeed Your Excellency, your own song is a “song of sorrow”.
I wish you well in the rest of your silent life.
Yours faithfully,
Jacob Unekwu Agada.
The author, EBULEJONU.
