It would be much appreciated, if our thinking faculty can do an extensive job beyond sense of entitlements as regard opinion and seek a very deep reflections between Senator Dino Melaye’s perceived blabs and the oath of allegiance duly swore to, by our leaders to serve humanity.
Let us also credit some extrapolated ill mannerism of the Senator to a usual LIFESTYLE which we somehow, but variably imbibed individually. Then, we can conclude if the adduced legal actions meted against the Senator is truly legal. Perhaps, if the sanctity of due processes been democratically advocated were in full force.
Firstly, the so-called police arrest and the subsequent jump out of a moving vehicle that had reduced the Senator to a common criminal. I don’t know much about Nigeria Judicial laws and it’s interpretations, hence, cannot tell whether or not the law forbids a case been tried anywhere in Nigeria regardless of where offence is been committed. But, article 10 of universal declaration of human rights states; “Everyone is entitled in full equality to a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal, in the determination of his rights and obligations and of any CRIMINAL CHARGE against him.”
Senator Dino Melaye was charged with unlawful possession of fire arms alongside three thugs who alleged he (Melaye) hired them to unleash mayhem in Kogi state. But his helpless cry on the possibility of been killed if detained in Lokoja were tagged whimper and given deaf ears. How fairly has the tribunal heard Dino Melaye?
Article 9 of the same universal declaration of human rights also state; “No one shall be subjected to ARBITRARY ARREST, detention or exile”. But Senator Dino Melaye was lured into believing the police were taking him to a court in Abuja to be arraigned, whereas, it was all a perfect plan to make the prey accessible to it’s predator.
In view of the above, I urge everyone berating the Senator to provide answer to the following questions;
1- Was there conspiracy against Dino from the realm of authorities more higher him?
2- How independent and impartial has the judiciary been in the ongoing trial?
3- Has the so called pranks to whisk the Senator away to Lokoja for trial not cleared possible doubts that Nigeria is actually a lawless Nation?
I have read gigantic comments from different quarters of Nigerians about the Senator’s grasped mischievousness. But trust me, more notions were borne out of internalised chauvinism on which corruption, nepotism, tribalism and marginalisation saw its root. Some said Dino Melaye didn’t play by the rules. Others opined that he doesn’t respect elders and so on. Politicians have been playing by the rules since 1999. Yet economy, infrastructure, power and security architecture remains shabby. In fact, the so called esteems for elders who have held sway see politics as a money making ventures. So if exposing corrupt activities and holding government accountable to the people is what we see as blab, we may have to wake up to some realities. As a matter of fact, there is no better way to confront incessant killings, unemployment, insecurities and social degradations staring at Nigerians.
I wonder what necessitate loyalty to our leaders especially when the obvious is detrimental to the people. But for those who think Senator Dino Melaye is paying a prize of insubordination. Nigeria is in total mess and if this is the prize Dino must pay for revealing the truth, so be it. As bonafide citizens of Nigeria, we owe her a duty to make our country a Sterling place. And until leaders are made to take responsibility for an action, such dream may tarry.
Apparently, Senator Dino Melaye has displayed uncommon pertinacity in the struggles for justice and equity. Unlike some of his colleagues who had turned the 8th assembly to a place of siesta, Senator Dino Melaye so far has over fifteen bills and twenty motions sponsored to his credit. A feet some senators cannot achieve even in the next thirty years in the Senate.
His constituency is also a living witness to the fact that the Okun born politician does not blab but has backed words with action. Senator Dino Melaye practically knelt before his colleagues in his bids to salvage the civil servants in Kogi state from a horrendous suicide mission they opted for, as a result of non payment of salaries, emoluments, gratuities and pension by the present government under Yahaya Bello.
For as long as our Democracy shall thrive, DINO MELAYE will forever remains indelible in the minds of the well meaning Nigerians.
As a matter of fact, Dino Melaye, like the story of Buchi Emecheta’s “Joys of Motherhood” which cut across the necessity of a woman to be fertile and above all, to bear children has proven to the world that activism is not an avenue to get cheap political attentions. He has practiced what he preached in those days. Not even governor Yahaya Bello can deny that. In fact, GYB will be stoned to death if he dares to walk with Dino Melaye on the street of Kogi.
It’s quite unfortunate that sycophancy, chauvinism and oppression had been a tradition in our political space. Be that as it may, there are people with conscience. But the problem is simple; evil in it’s legion has outweighed ustice. But Senator Dino Melaye lives on. Even if he is been unseated from the Senate, there are thousands who shall walk and work in his footsteps regardless of whose ox is gored.
God Bless Nigeria.
