Social Democratic Party (SDP) has called on the Nigeria Police Force and anti-corruption agencies to urgently investigate its former National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Gabam, and recover party’s fund allegedly misappropriated under his watch.

A statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, on Thursday, confirmed that the National Secretary of SDP submitted a follow-up petition to the office of the Inspector-General of the Nigerian Police on the matter, through the Anti-Money Laundering Enforcement department.

SDP called on IGP to bring the Police actions on the matter to an expeditious conclusion, to enable the party get the deserved justice and speedily, in the interest of Nigeria and democratic consolidation.

The Party also drew the attention of the respected elderstastemen and national figures to whom the formal national chairman has been running, seeking intervention, to be weary of him, so as not to drag their respected names in the mud of ignominy along with him.

The SDP expressed confidence that the Nigerian Police, the anti-graft agencies, and all the relevant institutions and systems will help to do justice in this well-established case of financial crimes against Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam and get him to return the alleged looted party funds.

“That’s the general hope, aspiration, position and demand of the generality of the members and stakeholder of the SDP, nationwide, particularly, as had been stated in a statement by the Conference of State Chairmen of the Party during their world press conference which held two weeks ago at the National Secretariat of the Party in Abuja.

“Considering the well-documented infractions of the Constitution of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), 2022 (as Amended), and the nation’s extant economic and financial crime laws, by the ousted national chairman of the Party, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, in relation to his ignoble activities while in office, which all relevant anti-graft agencies are well-briefed, one expects nothing less than speedy process of recovery of the looted funds of the Party from him, by those institutions with the relevant statutory duty, in the interest of Nigeria and to safeguard our democracy,” the statement read.

SDP said it was aware of Gabam’s moves to rally other expelled members of the party to support him.

“He is currently rallying a number of former state chairmen and some of the bunch of his co-travellers who were expelled alongside with him, in a meeting, through monetary inducements, of course, to possibly come out and make some public statements in his support. Truth is, all of these shadow-chasing actions are ill-advised. They serve him no good, as they amount to nothing but exercise in futility.

“It is, however, surprising that, while one expects that the embattled former national chairman would be sober and penitent, he keeps going about with the delusional mindset of untouchability and invincibility, banking on some powers within the systems and top circle of government officials to evade justice.

“Since his removal from office and expulsion from the Party on October 23, 2025, he has been busy running from the house of one elderstasteman to the other, presenting a slanted narrative of his crisis situation, to get them to help intervene and save his head from being shaved by the rough scissors of the law.

“In the last few days, reports confirm to the national leadership of the Party that he has succeeded in mobilizing some funds to help him out of the deep mess he finds himself. While it is expected that the wise thing for him to do, would be to bring such resources he has been able to gather from those who are sympathetic to his dwindled political relevance, to the party with an apology to defray part of the monies which he illegally funnelled out, he decided to wrongly deplore the funds to cultivate some few individuals within the ranks of the Party State Chairmen to help build a buffer for him, thereby further getting entangled in the web of crisis.”

The SDP said Shehu Musa Gabam is currently a subject of investigations on established financial crimes with the Nigerian Police and relevant authorities, and warned all members of the Party who may probably have the tendency of falling victim to his antics, to be mindful not to be found guilty as accessories after the facts.
